Welcome Back!
All year long we have been writing weekly journal entries in our "cowbooks"; we are now bringing our favorite stories to publication. Summer reading is essential to maintain what we have learned and to grow... Our classes have devised independent summer reading shopping lists in class~ and created a reading list for me! I am on Book #3... and I expect EVERY student to take this task as seriously as I am!

I have created a Diigo bookmark list for some interesting sites to visit~ I will continue adding to it, so please check back often!

SUMMER READING FACTS:
~~Reading 4 or 5 books over the summer can have a significant impact for middle school readers.

~~One advantage of public library summer library programs is that they are not located in school buildings, which helps reduce the negative perception about summer learning for students who are struggling.

~~Summer reading programs in public libraries usually encourage readers, especially those who are struggling, to use alternate formats such as magazines, recorded books, graphic novels, and material on the Internet.

~~Library summer programs offer extensive enrichment activities related to literature that is often not included in schools, because of the time constraints.

~~Participants often return to summer library programs in successive years, which helps children build reading into their summer routine.

In May 2008, Gorton's students completed a survey and we have put together a list of our most highly recommended books... this list is created by 7th grade and 8th grade boys and girls from our school... I have made my own summer reading list include quite a few of these titles (as well as what I am currently reading!!)

As always, please email me with any and all questions!  Thank you :)

In response to many questions from students about college admission requirements, I researched Rhode Island Colleges and University sites and created a list of their admission requirements as they are listed today.  Please feel free to explore outside of the state as well for any particular institution that you are interested in... it is NOT too soon to be looking ahead to see what they require!  The next four years are designed to prepare our kids for this!  Only coming into high school prepared with the knowledge will afford them the VERY BEST EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.  Please take the time to see what they require...

If you have any questions... Please email me!
