Protecting God's Children Training
On December 29, 2003, Bishop John B. McCormack released a revised policy entitled Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal: The Protection of Children and Young People (Policy) and a Code of Conduct entitled Serving Christ, Serving Others: A Code of Ministerial Conduct (Code). Both documents became effective on March 19, 2004, the Feast of St. Joseph, patron saint of the Diocese of Manchester.
This Policy provides measures that help prevent the sexual abuse of minors, that offer pastoral care to those who report abuse, that ensure due process for those accused of abuse, and for the permanent removal from ministry of anyone who sexually abuses a minor.”
Highlights of the revised Policy include the establishment of a lay diocesan Safe Environment Council, which will offer parishioners and school parents an opportunity to be involved in ensuring the safety of children and young people in parishes and schools. Background screening protocols, including criminal records and sex offender registry checks for all church personnel who work with children, are already underway and will be fully implemented in 2004 for the hundreds of priests, deacons and pastoral ministers and the thousands of volunteers in Catholic parishes, schools and institutions in New Hampshire.
The revised Policy also provides for initial training on child sexual abuse awareness, prevention, and reporting for all paid personnel and all volunteers who regularly work with children as well as refresher training at least once every three years.
