All 5th grade students have completed all labs that corrospond with the Pollution Unit and will soon begin exploring different ideas as we begin our final 5th grade science unit on Flight. We have already begun learning about the properties of air and the roles that lift, gravity, thrust, and drag play in flight. Some key vocabulary that we are learning follows:
lift gravity thrust drag air pressure matter mass volume molecule air resistance canopy surface area density envelope air angle of attack airfoil fuselage tail assembly wings streamlined Bernoulli principle blade hub propeller

This week in 6th Grade Physical Science...
This week we will be finishing up our unit on acids and bases. Students have been learning about the pH Scale, which is a way of measuring acids, bases and neutral substances. Last week students completed a lab in which they tested 18 substances to determine if the substances were acidic, basic, or neutral. Students used litmus paper, pH paper, and phenolphthalein as indicators.
We will have a quiz on acids and bases this Thursday. The review sheet handed out in class is also under the "Attachments" section below.
Next week we will also begin our study of phases of matter. Students will learn the characteristics that help to define each phase of matter.
