Class Expectations
Mathematics
Mr. Pointek
Rm 238

In order for our class to run smoothly throughout the year the following rules will be enforced:

1.  Be Respectful:  Everyone will treat each other and everything in the room with respect.  This includes but is not limited to using correct language, being on time, and doing what is asked of you.  Improper behavior will not be tolerated.  Remember 3 ¡§lates¡¨ add to one absence.

2.  Be Prepared:  Everyday you must come to class with your homework completed.  You need to bring your covered book, a pencil, and a 1-inch three ring binder.  The binder is to be divided into three sections; 1) Notes/Handouts/Classwork 2) Homework and 3) Tests/Quizzes

3.  Try your Hardest:  Math can be difficult.  You must concentrate and put in as much effort as possible during the time that you see me each day. I expect to see 100% effort on every assignment.  If you get stuck on a problem, do not give up.  Go on to the next problem.

***All students are to follow all rules and policies found in the SHS handbook at all times***

Grading Policy

Your quarter grade will be made up of the following.

„X       Tests - Count twice
Tests will be announced a week ahead of time.  They will usually cover a chapter of material.  No
notes will be allowed.

„X    Quizzes - Count once
There will be at least one quiz per week and usually be announced.  A quiz may cover anywhere from 1 to 4 sections, depending on their difficulty and importance.

„X    Homework and Classwork - Counts as a test grade
Homework is due at the beginning of each class.  It will be either checked off or collected and recorded on a daily basis.  Late homework will not be accepted; legitimate absences will be an exception.  Students are to use standard size paper for their homework.  Use the following heading written in the upper right-hand corner of the paper:
Name
Assignment
Period

A score will be given for each assignment according to the following guidelines.
„X    10 points ¡V completely done, all work   shown, none to few mistakes
„X    7 points ¡V good effort shown, few to several   mistakes
„X    5 points ¡V poor effort, no work shown
„X    0 points ¡V homework was not passed in

Quizzes or tests will be given weekly and projects will be assigned on an as needed basis.  Term grades will be determined by test results, quiz results, homework checks, homework quizzes, projects, and in class participation.

Make up
If you are absent on a non-test you MUST make up the work after school within 5 days.  I will not give make up quizzes or tests after that time has passed.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU MISSED AND MAKE IT UP.  Remember to have me check your make up homework when I have my grade book out.

If you are absent on the day before or day of a test, you will take the test the day you return.  The day before a test is always review; therefore you will have all the material for the test.

If you, the student has some other place you must be during the scheduled Math class, you must report to Math first.  Each student is responsible for any work assigned on that day or homework due on that day.  An authorized note verifying the student¡¦s whereabouts is necessary.

Calculators
You are encouraged to bring a calculator to class everyday.  If you are interested in buying a graphing calculator it would be to your advantage.  Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-83 plus are the recommended calculators.

Absence and Tardy policy
„X    3 tardies equals 1 absence
„X    For full year courses students may miss class 22 times (unexcused absences)

EHS Expectations for Student Learning ¡V Mathematics
„X    Reason effectively, think critically, and solve problems
„X    Demonstrate skills and competencies for lifelong learning
„X    Demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and the applications of science and mathematics
