Course Objective, Student Expectations and Curriculum Goals for Student Learning English I & II 

 The Ellington High School student will listen, view and read with understanding. This means the EHS students will..

                • Follow written, oral and visual directions.

               • Recall important information.

                • Identify, analyze and evaluate presented concepts.

Ellington High School students will achieve this when they…

               • Actively listen to literature and group discussions…

               • Read aloud by the teacher, a student or recorded narrator…

               • Actively read and understand a variety of literature (including short stories, novels, plays, poetry, non-fiction essays and personal narrative).

               • Actively view movie versions of some literature read in class and compare it to the written version.

The Ellington High School student will communicate effectively in speech and writing. This means the EHS student will…

                • Use different ways to communicate.

                • Employ logical sequence and transitions to create a cohesive product.

               • Use audience appropriate language, grammar and vocabulary.

 EHS students will achieve this goal when they…

                 • Effectively employ various thinking strategies to produce an organized approach to the writing process.

                 • Effectively apply the steps of the writing process to produce acceptable written products that fulfill class assignments.

Grading Policy English I & II

All work is graded based on the student’s academic achievement as well as his/her demonstrated effort throughout the task. 

 

  • Academic Achievement grades show the level of proficiency the student achieved regarding the acquisition of skills and knowledge.  

     

  • Demonstrated Effort grades earned are based on the quality of work, amount of work, and other factors that demonstrate the determination of the student in completing work. Both Demonstrated Effort and Academic Achievement grades are weighted equally to produce the student’s overall grade.

Reading 40% -Comprehension tests, vocabulary work and quizzes, projects, active reading assignments, and use of a reading strategy.

Written Language- 40% Written assignments, grammar, spelling quizzes.

Class Participation and Oral Language-20% On-task behavior, brings the necessary materials to class and is ready to work when the bell rings, group discussions, and oral presentations.
