The results are in for the American Mathematics Competition! The average score of the 66 Gideon Welles students who took the test is 10.3 out of a possible 25. (Remember the 8 in AMC-8 stands for grade 8.) The score distribution is illustrated in a graph in the January newsletter. Each student has been privately given his/her personal score. Awards and certificates for our Gideon Welles participants will be awarded at a later date.
Fun Activities! The website matti.usu.edu is a fabulous educational site. Games and activities are offered at different grade levels in different areas of math. Fifth grade students recently proved the Pythagorean Theorm on this site under grades 6-8 Geometry. WebQuests are controlled internet searches where the web sites are preselected for educational value and appropriateness. Glencoe Science has designed a wonderful site that offers 25 different web quests ranging in topic from alternative fuels to roller coaster physics. Simply type in Glencoe Science WebQuest into your address bar, select the Glencoe Science WebQuest site, and on the left side bar click on "Select Web Quests." Select a quest that interests you and have fun learning!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PARENTS: The Internet is a global electronic information infrastructure. It is a network used by educators, businesses, government, the military, organizations, and private individuals. It is used to educate, inform, communicate, and entertain. As a learning resource, the Internet is similar to books, magazines, video, CD-ROM, and other information sources. However, it is an unregulated communication environment within which information changes constantly. Some of the infornmation on the Internet is inappropriate for users, based on age and/or developmental levels. For this reason, parents are encouraged to closely monitor their children's use of the Internet to better ensure that the possiblility of inadvertent or unintentional access of objectionable data is avoided.
Below are some websites of interest. Some are fun educational sites for students. The rest are sites for parents who are interested in learning more about gifted education.
