INDEPENDENT READING PROGRAM BOOK REVIEWS ARE DUE May 6th, May 26th and the last day to hand in book reviews for the third quarter is June 9th!

Reading is a fundamental life-long skill. As with any skill, the more you use it, the better you get at it. During school we will, of course, be providing direct instruction of reading using some wonderful pieces of literature. However, your reading experience should not stop there.

You will be expected to read pleasure books of your choice each semester on your own time. You are encouraged, but not required to read a variety of literature, including, but not limited to historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, adventure, realistic fiction, horror, suspense, biography, autobiography, non-fiction, and mystery. As you read, you will earn points toward the independent reading portion of your grade. This will count as ten percent 10% of your grade. I will keep track of each student's progress on "bingo" cards by marking the appropriate square for each book you read. Each completed book will be worth 25 points. If you read three books in a row vertically, diagonally, or horizontally, you will score a bonus of 25 points. Once you have scored 100 points, you may continue to read additional books that will be counted as extra credit points. You will earn 5 points on your independent reading grade for each additional book you read!  This is a great way to get extra credit points in English class and have fun at the same time.

After you read each book, you will provide a brief book review (see format below) including the title, author, genre, characters, setting, summary (don't give away the end) and your opinion of the book. These will be kept in our classroom to be shared with fellow students as an aid in their selection of excellent reading material.

You may borrow books from our classroom library at any time, as well as from the Gideon Welles Library. I hope this Independent Reading Program will bring you hours of enjoyment.

(KEEP THIS SAMPLE FORMAT IN YOUR BINDER. WHEN YOU PREPARE A BOOK REVIEW YOU WILL WRITE OUT OR TYPE A REVIEW THAT CONTAINS ALL THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS SAMPLE.  YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FORM USING THE ATTACHMENT BELOW)
