Hello there,
Right now in our Kindergarten class, we are focusing on a variety of topics. We have just finished up our incredible sea life unit! I am amazed at the knowledge the children have acquired. They are very eager to share their new facts!
We have started our new unit of plants and Spring. The children have planted many seeds and are taking good care of their seedlings! We're incorporating many skills into this unit, and I'm continually impressed with your children!! Our butterfly kit should be arriving shortly as well as our tadpoles. It's an exciting time here in our classroom!
Your children have been continuing to grow and learn each and every day in our Kindergarten classroom! We have been working hard during the morning meeting time to learn letter formation, counting skills, sight words, vocabulary and patterning. We are becoming more respectful listeners when others are talking, sharing information with others and being careful with each other feelings. Each morning we talk about the words of wisdom which is read over the intercom. It is a perfect way of discussing acts of kindness, making good choices and ways we as Naubuc citizens can contribute to the school.
We're looking forward to our author study on Eric Carle. The children will be exposed to many of his wonderful books, and we'll do fun, meaningful follow up activities as well.
Math: We are working hard to solidify many of these areas:
counting to and recognizing numbers to 100
copying and creating simple patterns
doing simple addition and subtraction
identifying coins
telling time to the hour
creating and reading bar graphs
counting by 2's, 5's and 10's
I hope you are enjoying the fun math bags with your children. It's a great way to practice the skills we have covered in class. The skills they are building now will help them throughout the rest of their educational years.
I am asking the children to focus on the following five reading strategies as much as possible:
Use your reading finger.
Get your mouth ready.
Reread. (Go back and start the sentence again.)
Ask, "Does that sound right?"
Ask, "Does that make sense?"
Try to encourage your children to use these strategies as much as possible. Thanks!
We are learning many new sight words. We're doing a lot of writing in journals and notebooks too. We're hoping the children can start to identify beginning sounds of words. We continue to work on letter formation as well. Thank you in advance for your support in helping your child read the books they'll be taking home on Tuesdays. The children have been working hard and are so proud to show off their progress at home.
I can't believe how many new words they can spell, how they read the morning message board and how smart they are! This is such an exciting time for the children!!
Please click on Flashcards. The flashcards are the Kindergarten sight words the children will be responsible for by the end of the year.
Please call or write a note if I can help out in any way. Thank you for all of your help and support!!
Looking forward to talking with you soon,
Carol Lemieux
