Theme/Unit Words:

  HANDWRITING

We will be practicing the correct FORMATION and SIZE of each letter of the alphabet.  We call the letters:

      • "TALL" (b, d, f, h, k, l, t, and uppercase letters
      • "small" (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z)
      • "scuba" (g, j, p, q, y because they "dive" under the others!)

***You can help your child at home by asking your child to be a "letter detective" and find a letter that needs to be fixed!
(this will help your child learn to be independent in monitoring his/her own writing!)

Below are the letters the students are responsible for forming correctly.

*The newest letters are in bold.

Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr,Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Yy, Zz

                            READING

It is very important to set aside time each day to read with and/or to your child!  As a team, you and I can help build your First Grader's
 confidence and
interest
in reading by exposing him/her to literature each day!

We have discussed and will continue to practice 5 strategies
to help us with unknown words as we're reading:

  1. Check the picture
  2. Go back and re-read
  3. Get my mouth ready
  4. Think about: 'Does it sound right?', 'Does it make sense?'
  5. Look for "chunks"
  6. Skip the word (say "blank", then go back and figure out what would make sense)

Making text-to-text (book-to-book), and text-to-self connections to deepen comprehension of stories

Read Aloud Books

These are the books we have read as part of our lessons.  You can ask your child to "retell" these stories to you for practice, and/or feel free to check them out at the Library to reread and enjoy together!  (The newest books from the week are in BOLD.)
