SUMMER MATH PROGRAMS 2007 - Scroll down for Algebra Prep Program


MATH ENRICHMENT AND CMT PREP


WHO IS THIS FOR?


This program is for students who will be in the 7th or 8th grade next September and who are looking to strengthen their math skills. It will help 7th graders review fundamental math concepts and will help 8th graders prepare for the CMT's which they take in the Spring. (It is also appropriate for 9th graders needing to re-enforce fundamental math concepts.)

BUT IT'S THE SUMMER - IT BETTER BE FUN!

Stimulating approaches and a variety of fun activities will keep the classes interesting and moving. Activities include: Card tricks and number tricks; Hands-on manipulatives; Outdoor activities including Measuring the Unmeasurable & a Geometry Scavenger Hunt; Computer Lab activities including "Hot Dog Stand"; A statistical investigation of Skittles, Number Bingo .... and more!


The program will review the fundamental building blocks of mathematics based on the key areas identified in the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics: Estimation and Number Sense Operations Measurement Approximation Algebra and Functions Discrete Mathematics Probability and Statistics Patterns Integrated Understanding Ratios, Proportions, and Percents Spatial Relationships and Geometry


THE GOAL:


Each student will discover that Math can be fun and that they can be successful!


HOW WILL THIS PROGRAM ADDRESS EACH STUDENT'S NEEDS?



Students will be given a pre-course assessment to identify individual strengths and weaknesses and a post-program assessment to measure their progress. Classes will be structured to accommodate the age and skill level of each student.

Tom Mueller is a Connecticut Certified Mathematics Teacher with Middle School and High School experience.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND


- Course content will be designed around the key mathematical areas identified by the Nation Council of Teachers of Mathematics and tested in the Connecticut Mastery Tests given in the sixth and eighth grades.


- Classes will be structured to accommodate the age and skill level of each student.


- Classes will be limited to 16 students.


- Classes will be held at Smith Middle School.


- Register early - last years sessions filled quickly.


- Very positive feedback was received from last years students and teachers.


- Registration fee: $200.


- Participation will be confirmed via phone.


- Transportation will not be provided.

ALGEBRA PREP



WHO IS THIS FOR?

This program is for students who will be in the 8th or 9th grade next September and who are looking to get a jump start with Algebra.

BUT IT'S THE SUMMER - IT BETTER BE FUN!


The course includes stimulating approaches and a variety of fun activities that will keep the classes interesting and moving.  

The program will review the fundamental building blocks of Algebra:  Integers and Rational Numbers, Variables & Variable Expressions, Order of Operation, Mathematical Operations, Solving Equations, Word Problems and Practical Applications, Graphing lines to name a few.



THE GOAL:

Each student appreciate the beauty of Algebra and discover that Math can be fun and that they can be successful!
