 Dear Parents,

Welcome to our classroom web site. I will use this page to keep you updated on what is going on in our classroom, projects that are coming out, and heads up on events. I want this to be one way to keep you informed and to communicate my expectations. I do not see myself posting daily homework assignments at this time. I want to build and develop organizational and study skills  that your child will need to have. I want to help create responsible citizens to send on to Gideon Welles for sixth grade.

Thank you for such a warm open house the day before school started. I enjoyed meeting each child and family.

            IMPORTANT INFORMATION

There will be homework every night this school year. Your child is expected to read for 30 minutes every night. During the week, I will be assigning what they read. On the weekends, they are to do free reading and to be working on reading the Nutmeg Books. These books are in our school library.

Every fifth grader was given a student planner. This is like the planner they will have in sixth grade. I am requesting that you sign the planner every night so I know that you have seen that there was homework. Please try to let the student build independent skills and not do the homework for them. I will be signing the planners every morning and will write you a note every so often.

If you have a question or want me to call, please jot me a note in the planner.

If there is an emergency  the office number is 652-7875.  I have a phone in the classroom and you can directly call me at 652-7886.

Save the Box Tops for Education.  Keep saving them.

Rules we live by in Room 15

If you open it, close it.

If you turn it on, turn it off.

If you unlock it, lock it.

If you break it, admit it.

If you can't fix it, call someone who can.

If you borrow it, return it.

If you make a mess, clean it up.

If you move it, put it back.

If it belongs to someone else and  you want to use it, get permission.

If you don't know how to operate it, leave it alone.

If it's none of your business, don't ask questions.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If it will brighten someon's day, say it.

If it will tarnish someone's reputation, keep it to yourself.

( The above is taken from Ann Landers.)

I will have copies at Open House for you.

Social Studies

We study American History this year. We will learn how to use many types of books to do research and to take notes.

The topics we will do are:

Explorers, Colonies, Revolutionary War, Government, Westward Expansion, Immigration, Inventions, Civil War and get to the 1900's.

We will be participating in the National Geography Bee in late December or early January.

Science

This year we will switch classes for the science units.

Small Things - microscope and pond water

Light, Sound and Optics

Astronomy

Electricity

This is a good start to understanding fifth grade. It will be a journey that we will go through together. We will have a wonderful experience and many laughs. Thank you for all of the help and support that you have already given me. I can't wait to see what this year brings.

WORD PROBLEMS

HERE IS A SITE TO CHALLENGE THE BEST OF YOU OUT THERE.

HAVE SOME MATH FUN.

http://www.stfx.ca/special/mathproblems/
