Welcome to Mr. Axelson's Principal's "Hot Page."
We had a very exciting day at Waddell School today with the author visit of Suzy Kline. Ms. Kline is the author of over forty books. She presented three assembly programs today. The first for second and third graders; the second for Kindergarten and first graders; and the third for fourth and fifth graders. Suzy Kline's visit was made possible with funding from Waddell's PTA. Thank you PTA!!!
She shared with students a great deal of information about writing books and then shared pieces of her books with the children. She said, "If there is one thing I want you to remember about today author's visit, it is that every child should have a small notebook to write down words or sentences for stories." She showed the children some her notebooks, diaries and scrapbooks to show how she gets ideas for stories. She also told students her ideas for books were rejected over one hundred times before finally, after a number of years, one of her books was accepted to be published. You have to have a lot of perseverence to be an author and you can never get discouraged. Having been a second grade teacher for 26 years, she gathered many of her ideas from her students. One of her popular series of books are the Horrible Harry books. They are very funny but also very true in telling the experiences of children in school. Suzy Kline's books also have important messages that children can learn from. Today was a wonderful day that we'll remember for many days to come. Special thanks go out to Mrs. Corinne Colman, our librarian / media specialist for doing all of the hard work to bring Suzy Kline to Waddell.
Next Tuesday, June 7th is the school referendum on renovations to Bennet and Illing Middle Schools as well as new furniture for Waddell and Bowers Schools. By now, you have probably received an "Explanatory Text for Referendum Question to Expand and Renovate Bennet and Illing Middle Schools and Purchase Furniture and Equipment for Bowers and Waddell Elementary Schools." This pamphlet provides important information that all Manchester citizens should know. It should help the voters of Manchester make an informed decision. It is inappropriate for me to tell you how to vote. However, I want to encourage all Waddell community voters to make sure to get out and vote. It is your precious right and responsibility.
The school year is rapidly closing. I hope you enjoyed last weeks Instrumental and Choral Concert. The students really did a great job! After today, there are thirteen more days of school. The teachers and I have a lot of work to do as do your children. Please encourage them to come to school prepared to complete their assignments and do their best. In June, there will be special events for fifth graders. On June 10th there is the DARE Graduation. Fifth graders are working hard to finish their DARE essays. Then on June 15th, there will be the Fifth Grade Honor's Assembly, which is always a highlight of the school year. While the days of school are getting fewer and fewer, teaching and learning will take place until the very last day of school. Thank you for all of the support you have given to the school throughout the year. I'll look forward to seeing you as we get closer to the end of school.
