As summer vacation approaches, families will be involved in many activities that provide opportunities for ongoing language stimulation. Some tips for encouraging growth of communication skills during the summer months include:
- Read to your child every day, or, if he is old enough, have him read each day. Visit the local library often during the summer months, and encourage your child to take out books on topics that interest him.
- Encourage your child's contact with other children (e.g. play dates, pool parties, day trips, etc.). Peers provide speech models for your child, and they give him opportunities to verbally interact with others.
- Use vacation trips as opportunities for language development. Talk about the places you visit, and try to use varied vocabulary to introduce new words to him. Use photographs to visually reinforce and review the experiences you share on vacation.
- Carry on regular conversations with your child. During these summer months, your child might feel more relaxed, and might be more willing to share his thoughts with you. Pay attention to him when he's talking; try to look at him frequently. As questions to let him know you're interested in what he's saying. You can learn a great deal from your child during these casual conversations.
Above all, enjoy these special times with your family. Have a safe, happy, and relaxing summer!
