New Britain Museum of Art--field trip this Tuesday, February 10. Remember a bag lunch in a disposable container -unless you signed up for lunch from the cafeteria. NO cameras are allowed in the museum. Your child should not bring any money-we will not be visiting a gift shop.
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Thursday, February 12. Please be sure your child brings his/her Valentines cards to school by Wednesday.
Friday, February 13, is the last day of school before our break. There will be a Blue and Gold assembly at 2:30.
The fourth grade classes will be watching the movie, Ruby Bridges, this week. The movie is the true story of a six year old girl who entered a white-only school in 1960. We have been discussing segregation and prejudice in connection with Black History month. As we watch a segment of the movie on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we will talk about the events that unfolded and their impact on history.
If you are interested in more information, the following site gives an overview of the events of 1960.

CAREER DAY-On Friday, February 27, the Student Council is sponsoring Career Day as a school spirit day. They thought it would be fun and interesting to have children dress up as a person in the career they are most interested in. Math
We are working on double digit multiplication and long division. The children are also reviewing and practicing other concepts that will be part of the CMTs.
Double-digit multiplication--Your child is learning a few different algorithms for solving these problems.
Partial product involves breaking the numbers into parts, solving for each part, and adding the resulting products together.
Lattice method-Children create a lattice by drawing squares equal to the number of digits, dividing those squares diagonally, and solving.
Traditional--I am stressing with the class the importance of learning the traditional method of solving multiplication problems.
Division:
They are learning a chant to remember the steps and a way to easily remember the steps. D (Dad) Divide M (Mother) Multiply S (Sister) Subtract B (Brother) Bring down
They have also been introduced to partial quotient as a method of solving division problems.
Please take the time to review and practice the multiplication tables with your child.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The children formed Tribes and are working in those groups as we learn about the Thirteen Colonies and the American Revolution. Each Tribe developed a colonial family. They've chosen a last name and each child has selected a colonial first name. In addition, they created their family structure and the age of each member. Later, each Tribe will choose a colonial job.
The children formed small groups to research information about the colonies founding, life in colonial times, trades and crafts, and important leaders of the time. Each child got to choose the colony they would work on.
These units will run from this month through March.
