Mr. Arntsen
Welcome to my web page and to grade 8 science on the INDIGO TEAM !
The information and links on this web page provide resources available to students throughout the year. The contents include the following:
Ø An overview of the grade 8 science curriculum at Timothy Edwards Middle School.
Ø Overviews of individual units within the curriculum. These are added / deleted during the school year as we move through the curriculum.
Ø Links to DOWNLOAD work sheets, study guides, activities and other assignment materials. These are located at the bottom of the web page and are usually in a word format. Copies of presentations given in class are also available to students to download. These are usually in POWERPOINT.
Ø Vocabulary FLASH CARDS. These will be found at the top of the web page.
Ø Links to web sites that will directly support student learning of the curriculum. These include:
· QUIA - For most units covered during the year I load practice quizzes and tests as well as review activities and games. Students register for this site using a class ID provided in school and their name and student ID number. The site is secure and the services are provided through contract with the school system.
· HOLT ON-LINE text book. For a number of units this year students will have access to an on-line version of their text book. In addition, the site provides links to supporting videos and review materials. This is an excellent resource if a student leaves their book at school as well as providing additional supporting material.
Generally speaking the science curriculum can be organized into the following areas:
Ø Chemistry
Ø Reproduction, heredity and genetics
Ø Weather
From the start of the year to March, when the CMT’s are given, the curriculum addresses topics included in the State of Connecticut Middle School Science Standards. Following the CMT’s, content areas begun earlier in the year are extended and expanded to include concepts covered in the State of Connecticut High School Science Standards. The table below illustrates the major topics in the curriculum as well as the plan for pre and post CMT delivery.
| Chemistry | Reproduction/ Heredity/ Genetics | Weather |
Pre CMT | Properties of Matter | Mitosis | The Atmosphere: composition, air currents, wind, pressure |
States of matter/ Phase changes | Meiosis | Weather: water cycle, humidity, clouds, precipitation, air masses and fronts, severe weather |
Elements, compounds and mixtures | Basic inheritance of traits |
Structure of the Atom |
|
Post CMT | Periodic Table | Mendellian Genetics |
|
Chemical bonds and reactions |
|
|
Prior to the CMT's, students will also review the scientific process and complete an embedded lab that will be included on the CMT's.
Web Page Maintenance Duing the Year
During the year I also use my web page to post information on assignments as well as attach copies of supporting documents, in word or powerpoint format, for student use.
