News from Second Grade

at Wapping School

Yesterday we celebrated the 100th Day of school!  Thank you for sending in 100 items.  Everyone was very creative.

In math, the children finished the first math journal.  They will be bringing their old journals home over February Vacation.  We are currently working on mental arithmatic skills for adding three or more 1 and 2 digit numbers, measurement  to the nearest centimeter and inch,  and finding the median of a set of data.  We will also continue to practice skills already taught.

In social studies the children have been working on the maps and globes unit.  They have been learning about the 7 continents, 4 oceans, the equator, and reading a map key.

In language arts

In reading the children have been summarizing stories written by Steven Kellogg.  Some of the stories that we read were Pinkerton Behave!, Best Friends, Can I keep Him?, and Ralph's Secret Weapon.   We have also been reading the Weekly Reader about Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Obama.

In Words Their Way the children are working on spelling words with the CVC and CVVC (i.e. e, ee, and ea) patterns.

In writing the children have been writing many stories.  They just finished typing one of their revised stories on the computer.  They are also finishing a story about when they are 100 years old.  The stories are wonderful! The stories are still in draft form.  They will be editing and putting the stories into final drafts next week.  Also, on Thursday,  Mrs. Hickson will be coming to our classroom to hear their stories.  I can't wait for you to read them.  I know you will enjoy reading them!

Miscellaneous:

Hopefully the weather will be warmer next week and we'll be able to get outside for recess.  If the weather is above 30 degrees we will be going outside.  Please make sure your child is wearing a warm winter coat, hat, and mittens.  They are not allowed to go into the snow without snowpants, boots, and mittens.  They can only walk in the snow if they have boots with a change of shoes (to minimize the wet snow on the carpets).  Please call me if you have any questions.

VALENTINES DAY!

We will be celebrating Valentines Day next Friday, February 13th with an exchange of valentines during snack time.  There WILL NOT be a classroom party.  Students WILL BE making valentine bags in the classroom during the week.  I'm attaching a class list to help with addressing valentines.

READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY!

Please let me know if you will be available to share a read aloud on Read Across America Day - Friday, February 27th between 12:30 p.m. until 1:55 p.m.

Have a nice weekend!
