SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community

Welcome!

Happy new school year!  I'm looking forward to working with you and your children this year.  A big emphasis will be on functional communication--concentrating on goals that will help your child be an effective communicator throughout his/her life.  One of the biggest challenges continues to be motivating the children with autism to initiate using any form of
communication.  Your help and suggestions are always welcomed, especially with identifying your child's most favorite things and situations where a reliable way of communicating would be most helpful.

We use a total communication approach at River Street, and emphasize whatever system (speech, sign, communication boards, PECS, etc.) is best for an individual child.

Visual strategies are particularly helpful for many of our children, and are used throughout the school day.   If you need materials or ideas for setting up systems at home, I would be more than glad to help.  Some ideas for using picture communication at home would include these:

     Calendar
     Morning routine
     Selecting what to eat
Following recipes  (I have these with pictures if you would like them)
     Schedule
     Selecting clothes for the day
Choosing toys, leisure activities, videos to watch, etc.
Going to fast food restaurants (most have picture menus you can use, and I
           have some boards, also.

Please feel free to contact me anytime you have a question, comment, suggestion, or input of any kind.  If we work as a team, we can maximize the progress your child makes.  Any information about how/what/when your child communicates at home is extremely helpful in planning work at school.  To get in touch you can send a note to your child's teacher in your communication log book, call (298-9079 Ext. 2042), or email me and I will get back to you promptly.

                                                                   Thanks for your interest,

                                                                   Mary Alice
