National Poetry Month is in April, but as you can see, the fourth grade got a head start by exploring poetry throughout the month of March and into April. Our study has focused on the text Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech. Within the text, a reluctant poet (Jack) is exposed to a variety of styles of poetry and various poets by his teacher, Mrs. Strechberry. As Jack is exposed to different poems, our students were exposed as well. The students worked to write their own poems, following the different forms presented within the text. The students wrote free verse poems about a favorite pet or animal. Then they went on to explore poems that follow a clear rhythm. We also had a lot of fun exploring creative ways of forming shape poems. We encourage you to ask your child about the text, Love That Dog. It makes a quick read, and some students may want to re-read it independently after we complete it. We also encourage you to visit the local library with your child and explore the poetry section (811 in the Dewey Decimal System). Poetry can be a fun way for students to explore descriptive language. Share some of your favorite poems with your child and have them do the same. |
