Civil War Reenactment Project

Explanation of Project:  All 7th and 8th grade students in the Middle School will be participating in a Civil War reenactment on Friday, May 23rd  at 1:00 pm.  The battle will be between the students of 7th Grade vs.8th Grade with the Cross-Graded team representing the “Border States”.  All students will be exposed to several Civil War topics while the 8th grade students will learn about the Civil War by rotating through mini-lessons conducted throughout the morning of May 23rd .   This will be a fun and exciting project, but it will also be an academic project which will be assessed as part of the 4th marking period grade report.  This permission slip will explain the activities which each student will participate in the day of the reenactment and the requirements of each student prior to the reenactment.  The grading criteria will also be explained.

Student responsibility prior to reenactment
•    Each individual student must complete a 20 question research guide. Guides must answer each question and be at least 70% correct in order to qualify for full participation in the re-enactment.  These will be due on May 20th.  Each question is worth 5 points.  Total points- 100
•    Each individual student will be assigned a company, regiment, or unit.  Each member of these groups must produce something for unit morale.  Examples would be creation of company flag, writing company fight song, creating company slogan or insignia, creating regiment flag, researching unit history,  etc. Total points- 20
•    Students will receive 20 participation points for battle preparation and during the battle itself.  Failure to follow orders, complaining about official rulings, or general misbehavior may result in a reduction of points.  Total points- 20
•    Total points for project- 140
•    Eligibility requirements- All students must have earned at least 70% of pre-reenactment points in order to participate in the battle.  Any significant or repetitive misbehavior may result in a student being excluded from the battle. Students not in the battle will receive an alternate assignment to earn the points for the battle itself.

Battlefield Activities
•    Students will be divided into Northern and Southern armies.
•    Soldiers will throw water balloons at each other to simulate firing weapons.
•    Artillery will fire water balloons from catapults constructed by students.
•    Each side may have up to six cavalry soldiers on bikes provided by the students.  The cavalry will predominately be used to carry messages from officer to officer.
•    Both sides will march, play music and sing battle songs prior to the actual battle
•    We regret that we will not be able to allow parents to attend the battle.

Please call Mr. Wilson, Mr. Haines or Mr. Handley at 465-1834 for any more information or if you feel you can help our project in anyway.

Thank you,
Mr. Handley
