Number 2. June Dog and Pony Show Project

Microsoft WORD, Period 1 Class

Due Date is June 5, 2007

YOUR DOG AND PONY SHOW by Mrs. Jaysnovitch, A80

You decide to buy a dog, but not just any dog. The key for you is to find the perfect canine for you and your living situation. After you find the perfect pooch, you will need to think about a companion for it. Should it have two legs, four legs, wings or all of the above?

Don’t delay! It is time to do some research. Use the Internet and two search engines (such as Google, Yahoo) to investigate three breeds of dogs that you think you would like by answering the following questions for each of the three breeds:

A.         What are the characteristics of each breed?

B.          What type of temperament does the breed exhibit?

C.          What is the general appearance (size, color, etc.) of the dog?

D.         How can you contact the major rescue organization for this breed of dog?

After you complete the research for each of the three breeds, think about your own lifestyle and characteristics and choose a breed that is right for you. Add the name of the breed you chose to your document along with at least three pictures of that breed of dog (copied from the Internet). Make up an advertisement for that breed of dog in portrait format with five or more graphics and an appropriate border.

INTERNET RESEARCH FOR THE HORSE:

Your dog is lonely when you go away, so you decide to get your dog a horse for company.  Once again you need to do some research. Use three search engines to investigate three breeds that you would like. As you find information, answer the following questions in MS Word:

A.    What are the characteristics of each breed?

B.     What type of temperament does the breed exhibit?

C.     What is the general appearance (Size, color) of the horse?

After you complete the research for each of the three breeds, think about your own lifestyle and characteristics and choose a horse that is right for you.  Add the name of the breed of horse you chose and add at least three pictures of that breed of horse obtained from the Internet.  Make up an advertisement for that breed of horse.  Use landscape format and five or more graphics and one border for the ad.

NUMBER 3 PROJECT. WRAP UP YOUR DESKTOP PUBLISHING PROJECT EARLY THIS WEEK of June 4 to 6, 2007.  I HAVE SHOWN YOU MANY EXAMPLES OF THE DESKTOP PUBLISHING PROJECT that students have done earlier this year -- for ideas on creativity.  There are manila folders on each desk containing these projects.  You completed TEN ITEMS -- letterhead, place mat, menu, grand opening sign, hours of operation, employee application blank, Tee Shirt contest sign among other items.  The tenth item can be anything complementary to the other nine items.  Follow all directions given in the packet.  There is also a packet of background information for you to use as you complete this project. Keep the project on the desk -- not in your individual folder.  Print when you are finished with the entire project -- ten items.

4.  Begin the class period with the Do Nows from the special paper I gave you in  your green folder on your individual desks. We will print the  THREE Do Nows from this week on Wednesday, June 6, 2007.

5. During this period you are to follow the directions in your book and save each item as indicated in the book.

6. Headers and Footers in Word From Mrs. Jaysnovitch, 2007

So what's a header and footer and why should you want to know about them?

Headers and footers can be found in Microsoft Word.  The header usually appears as a text box at the top of every one of your pages and a footer is a text box that appears at the bottom of every one of your pages (see picture to the right).  Whatever you put in the header and footer will be repeated on every single page of your document.  This could be real handy if you needed to put your name at the top of every page, or the date at the bottom of every page.  You can also use headers and footers to number the pages of your document.

You can use headers and footers to put your Word document into the MLA Format.  In the MLA format you want to put your last name and the page number on the top of every page of your document.

Go to "View" on the menu bar and look for:

This will put a text box at the top and bottom of your page.  It should also bring up the "Header and Footer Toolbar".  Click in the text box at the top the page and type in your last name.  To have the computer automatically number your pages press the "Insert Page Number" button on the Header and Footer Toolbar.  When you are done with the header and footer click the button on the right hand side of the Header and Footer toolbar.

To get back into the header and footer just repeat the process described above.

Creating Public Service Posters that Inspire Girls to Pursue Studies in Computer Science This homework is based on a related New York Times article "Computer Science Takes Steps to Bring Women to the Fold", By CORNELIA DEAN, April 19, 2007

Overview of this HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:  In this homework, you will share words and associations related to computer scientists. You will create an 8 ½ x11 public service poster designed to inspire girls in SWMHS to pursue studies using the computer. Consider entertainment (gaming, animation, and film editing), arts (digital cameras and multimedia art), sports (computer-enhancement devices for televised sports), medicine (diagnostic and treatment equipment), and travel (global positioning systems, traffic lights and advancements in plane and space travel).
  6. Might  you want to be part of a team that influences the development of advancements in any of these fields? Why or why not?

2. Read  the article "Computer Science Takes Steps to Bring Women to the Fold" and answer all of the following questions in full sentences.

g. Why do scientists like Dr. Cuny believe that a woman's perspective is important to the future of computer science?
h. How do you think the absence of women might affect the future of computer science?
i. What suggestions might you offer to increase the numbers of women pursuing degrees in the field?

3. You will now create a public service 8 ½ x11 poster encouraging women to study about computers and consider a career in computer science. Answer the following question:  How might your individual poster challenge your classmates at SWMHS to break the stereotypes and inspire a new generation of women to become leaders in the field of computer science?  Do you believe it will influence the perceptions boys in SWMHS have about girls and women and computers?  For example business might include the stock market, the workplace, and services and products that are sold.  The sports field might include baseball, basketball, and NASCAR< and it might also consider live and televised games, as well as fantasy sports.  Arts might include fine art and museums, performing art and literature; while entertainment might include music, animation, movies and television.

4.  ANSWER THE FOLLOWING FOURTEEN QUESTIONS IN FULL SENTENCES.

1.  What is your possible career for the future?

3How might they be used in this field in the future?
4. How are you and your peers affected by these uses today? How might you be affected in the future?
5.How might advancements in computer technology change the way aspects of the field are experienced today?
6. How might girls or women influence the way aspects of the field are experienced or undertaken?
7. In what way might women provide leadership or insight in this area?

8. How do advances in technology influence your own life?
9. What role, if any, would you like to play in influencing those advancements?
10. If you were to give advice to SWMHS teachers in this field for attracting more women, girls, and young people, what would it be?

CONTINUE ARRIVING TO CLASS ON TIME EACH DAY. I HOPE TO BE PROUD OF MY MICROSOFT WORD CLASS.

10. USING WIZARDS AND TEMPLATES TO CREATE POWERPOINT SLIDE SHOWS When you create a new PowerPoint slide show, you can use either a wizard or a template, but which approach is best? Well, the answer really depends on your project. Wizard might be more helpful if you have a good idea of what you want to include in your presentation, while Templates might be a better choice if you aren't very sure what you want to do, or if you aren't very experienced with creating presentations from scratch. Here's some more information to help you decide. A wizard consists of a series of dialog boxes that step you through a process by asking you what elements you want to use in your slide show. To use the wizard, run PowerPoint and select the radio button labeled AutoContent Wizard. Now, simply click Next, answer the question, and then continue to click Next until you have answered all of the questions. If PowerPoint is already running and you would like to use the wizard, choose File, New. When the New Presentation dialog box opens, click the Presentations tab. Now, double-click AutoContent Wizard to close the dialog box and start the wizard. Templates are slide shows that have already been set up for you, but you can make whatever modifications you need to create your own show. To use a template, run PowerPoint and select the radio button labeled Template. Click OK and then choose the template that best suits your needs. If you don't see what you need in the Presentations Design area, click the Presentations tab and look through those templates too. If PowerPoint is already running, you can choose File, New. When the New Presentation dialog box opens, click the Presentation Design tab. There is no reason to consider one method preferable to the other. Use the template when it suits you best, and the wizard when it seems to work best. Or, just start with a blank slide and develop your show from scratch.
