WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE FIRST GRADE...

WEEKS OF JUNE 9TH AND JUNE 16TH, 2008

We are down to the final stretch of school.  This is the last FULL week.  There are quite a few reminders for this week and next:

-   Last day for the AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM is this Wednesday.  Please be sure to make the proper arrangements for next week.

      -   Marking period ends this Thursday

      -   No school Friday, June 13th.  This is an unused snow day.

      -   Next week from June 16th to June 19th, there is an 11:15am dismissal.  Please pick up your child promptly.

      -  Last day of school prayer service on Thursday, June 19th at 10:00am, Santa Maria Church. All are welcome to attend

      -  No school on Friday, June 20th

I am going to start sending home book covers, workbooks, and all other papers/projects that have been hanging around the classroom beginning this week and next.  As per Sr. Judith, students will receive their final report cards next Thursday.  Unless all tuition and library fees are up to date, your child will not receive theirs.  Thank you for your cooperation in the above matters.

LANGUAGE ARTS

I will be combining the last of the Language Arts lessons over the next 2 weeks.  We will be reading 7 short stories.  They are as follows: Monkey Fun, Weather, Baboon, The Race,  Little Star, Cats in Space, and Planets.  We will be introduced to the long sound of /e/, /ea/, and /o/.  We will review the rest of the long vowel sounds throughout the week and go over the contraction “not”.  We will read “Baboon” and create our own scenes from the story.  We will see how to correctly use go and went in sentences to show present and past actions.  We will classify words with the same vowel sounds and use them in sentences.  We will write sentences in quotes and use captions to tell about stories we have created.  We will reinforce the endings –ed and –ing in words.  Lastly, we will write stories about the 9 different planets that we have learned and watch a video stream on each.  Our stories will be called “TO....AND BEYOND!”  We will also construct a poem about space and draw a picture from the poem.  We will complete the final pages on all of our workbooks The vocabulary words for this week are as follows: disappear, mouth, shook, ground, across, planet, space, rocket, spacecraft, and pictures.  The spelling words are: get, led, head, bread, ready, spread, thread, breakfast, weather, instead, bed, pet, fed, help, them, roll, ago, so, old, over, open, same, game, came, name, tight, right, light, night, post.  Students already wrote these words 5x last Friday.  We will use each word in a sentence in class on Tuesday.  To make things a little easier, we will break up the words into groups of 15 and arrange the words in ABC order on Wednesday during class.  The FINAL test will be taken TOGETHER on Thursday.  Please review these words with your child throughout the week We will complete the last of our theme tests next week.  However, it will not count as a grade.

MATHEMATICS

We will continue working with money.  On Monday, students will count using dimes, nickels, and pennies.  They will discover various ways to show each amount.  On Tuesday, we will use data from a graph to solve several word problems.  Wednesday, we will have a brief diagnostic checkpoint and review session.  A quiz will be given right before the introduction to Thursday’s lesson.  We will then begin to work with quarters and examine how much a quarter is worth.  We will conclude the week by counting different sets of coins.  It would be most helpful if you worked with your child at home too.  Perhaps, maybe “charge”them for some ice cream or candy.  They love to pick out the coins. Give it a try!  Next week, we will begin half dollar and dollar in our books.  Students are free to complete the rest of the sections in the workbooks over the summer vacation, as these topics will appear in the beginning of 2nd grade.

RELIGION

We will work out of a mini-textbook called “Family Life”.  We will focus on the role and importance of family this week.  I ask each child to bring in a picture of their family on or by Wednesday for a classroom discussion and project.  All the chapters are very short in this book.  By Thursday, we will be ready to begin Chapter 2, Families Love and Help One Another.  We will work out of our Family Life books until we have completed them next week.  We will discover that we all have feelings and see how our love grows.  Students will see how love is for sharing, not keeping.  At the conclusion of each chapter, students will compare their life with that of Jesus’.  We will see how when we are baptized, we become children of God.  We will recite several prayers, including the Lord’s Prayer, The Hail Mary, and the Glory to the Father.

SCIENCE

We will begin to discuss the different land forms of our Earth such as mountains, hill, plains, and valleys.  We will continue with this lesson and watch a DVD where it models erosion.  Students will also discover what a”drought” is and ways to prevent it.  I will be working out of our textbooks, lab manuals, and homework review books up until Tuesday of next week.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will complete the remainder of our textbook called “Our World”.  We will review all the glossary terms that we have acquired throughout the year and have an open cumulative review period on Thursday.  We will look at the map of the US in our textbooks,  then go outside to the big map and walk around each state that is not covered by the shed.

I hope you had a wonderful year thus far.  We have advanced a great deal since September.  Learning never ends in the 1st grade.  We will be discovering new and interesting facts all the way up until the last day of school.  Have a great summer! Don’t forget to READ, READ, and READ some more J I wish everyone the best of luck.  This is not the end, but rather a new beginning.  When one door shuts, another opens with an opportunity to succeed.  I will never forget the students I grew to call my “children”.  I love you all and forever, you will be in my heart....
