Welcome to the Thomas McKean High School

Highlander Band Bulletin Board!

BEACH TRIP!

The weather does not look good, but there is no rain date for this event, so keep your fingers crossed.  (And bring clothes that suit the weather).  If it's completely un-beachable, we'll come up with plan "B".

We will meet at McKean at 8:45 AM on Saturday morning.

We will NOT be able to get inside the school before we leave, so bring everything you need with you from home.

We will be home around 8 PM unless weather forces us to come home early.

I hope you have a terrific and restful summer, and I can't wait to see you all in August!

THE FIRST BAND EVENT OF THE 08-09 SCHOOL YEAR IS THE OPENING PICNIC on AUGUST 10th!  Mark your calendars now...(and check our calendar for other important dates)

WOW!

WOW!

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!

Congratulations to ALL OF YOU for a  fantastic performance in last night's concert.  You were focused and well-prepared, and you sounded great.  Some quotes from audience members:

"the band sounded like 100 people"

"that was the best band performance I've heard in four years of coming to these concerts"

"the improvement between December and now is amazing"

"Now I'm really looking forward to hearing the group next year"

"it's not quantity, it's quality, and you had plenty of that tonight"

"you guys were so good I almost cried--I'm so proud of you" (that one was from Mrs. Morton...)

Thank you all so much for your hard work and dedication.  I am incredibly proud of what you have accomplished this year, and I can't wait to see and hear you in the fall.  I'm extremely glad that I moved back to Delaware so I could work with you...coming to McKean was the best professional decision I've ever made!

Band Business:

What are YOU doing to make the MHS BAND the best it can be?

Here are some things you can do over the summer to help us:

  1. Practice!  Play your instrument regularly.  If you need to borrow or rent one, contact me ASAP
  2. Recruit!  Think of people you know at school who used to play an instrument...if you think they will help us be great, get them involved!  We are only as strong as our membership.
  3. Plan!  Check the band calendar now and mark your family's calendar.  Make sure you can attend every event and be an active part of our program!  Remember--starting next year, attendance at all events, including rehearsals, is required to get credit for band
  4. Reach out!  If you know any incoming 9th graders, get in touch with them, and help them get excited about band.  Make sure they know about meetings and rehearsals, etc. and start making them part of the BAND FAMILY right away.
  5. Work!  There will be a few days this summer when I invite students and parents to come in and help with clean-up and prep work before we start to rehearse.  Instead of sitting at home playing "Halo" (or whatever), come in and be part of the MHS BAND TRANSFORMATION!

--There are lots of new LINKS at the bottom of this page...check them out and see which ones can help you!  There are fingering charts, articles, lessons, and some "how-to" things for each instrument

--Check out the FLASH CARDS link at the top of the page, too.  Right now it's just set up for the major key signatures, but we'll use it for different things as time goes by.
