Week of: 05/12 - 05/16/08

Dear 6th Grade Families:

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughtful gifts for Teacher Appreciation! I very much enjoyed my special lunch last Wednesday, and am very grateful for the dining gift cards (one of which has already been used to help celebrate my 21st Anniversary!). But mostly, I loved the flowers and the cards, which truly reflect your gifts from the heart.

KIDS – WISH MOM A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY THIS SUNDAY!

A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path. -- Agatha Christie

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. You are connected to your child and to all those who touch your lives. A mother always has to think twice: once of herself and once for her child. -- Sophia Loren

A mother's arms are more comforting than anyone else's. -- Princess Diana

The strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws. -- Barbara Kingsolver

Don’t Forget:  There will be an 11:30 dismissal on Friday, May 16.

IT'S NOT A LOT TO ASK!

BOYS AND GIRLS
SPRING HAS ARRIVED!  However, the days haven’t quite caught up with the season, YET. Please remember to dress appropriately — meaning, wearing jackets or sweatshirts when coming to school and going out for recess. Students must have the St. Timothy school sweater inside the classroom for chilly days and days when the air conditioning kicks in..

White CREW SOCKS are the ONLY
kind of socks permitted!
PLEASE FOLLOW THE UNIFORM DRESS CODE.

Also Remember:

Shirts MUST be tucked in
BELTS must be worn with khaki shorts and pants

Thank you.

PLEASE remember to bring in a note EVERY  time you stay after school.  There are NO  exceptions to this rule!!

Attention Thespians!!  THANK YOU for taking the time to audition. Scripts have been distributed, and ALL stage actors (this doesn’t include the Narrators) should be memorizing their lines. The plays will be as follows:
       6A – Joan of Arc
6B – Robin Hood Helps a Sorrowful Knight
ALL REHEARSALS WILL TAKE PLACE DURING CLASS TIME.

HERE YE! HERE YE!  Calling all Medieval lords and ladies of the St. Timothy kingdom!  Medieval Day, a 6th grade tradition, will take place on Thursday, June 5.  It’s not too early to start thinking of costumes!  This does NOT mean spending lots of money on beautiful brocade gowns and authentic chain mail.  Remember that most of the people during the Middle Ages were peasants and serfs.  Even the nobility dressed simply.  It wasn’t until the Renaissance and the Age of Exploration that people started “dressing up!”

Medieval Day is a great day to volunteer at school. The events and activities are fun and your role is mostly a supervisory one. We need your presence though, to make things run smoothly. Come for the plays and stay for the day. Thanks in advance for your help. We hope to see you there!

And now, here's what you can expect to learn in Social Studies, Reading, and Language Arts:

Social Studies: We have begun our final chapter in our History textbooks – Ch 15: The Renaissance and Reformation.  We have already started discussing the steps taken from being in the Middle Ages to being “reborn” and exploring new ideas in art, science, and literature.  Our studies will also take us to Germany, where a Catholic priest named Martin Luther challenged the church’s practice of accepting “indulgences.”  This led to the Reformation.
Our test will be on Thursday, May 22.

Crispin: Cross of Lead

Reading:  We started reading the book Crispin: Cross of Lead by Avi. Students have been given information on the assignments they need to complete as they read the book.

Writing Project:  Over the next week, students will be writing Persuasive Essays and learning that often "the pen is mightier than the sword" when trying to get what they want!  The file containing the "Persuasive Writing Prompts" can be found as an attachment below.

Grammar: We are studying Adverbs. The test is scheduled to be given on Thursday, May 29.

Vocabulary: The next test on words in Unit 14 will be given on Tuesday, May 13.

Students are reminded that there will be an additional FIVE words from previous units added to the test.
Studying the parts of speech is a key to doing well on these Vocabulary tests. Besides the Unit Vocabulary Activities (V.A.) which focus on this skill, making flash cards is a very helpful way for you to learn this.

STUDENTS ARE ADVISED THAT TWO VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT ACTIVITIES ARE DUE FOR EVERY UNIT EVEN IF IT IS NOT POSTED ON THE ASSIGNMENT BOARD.
Students must include ANY five words from Units 1 - 12 in addition to the 20 words in the current unit.

Click on the textbook below to get to a link to the assignment sheet, although, each student has a copy in his/her binder. Please remember to follow the directions for these assignments, ESPECIALLY THE HEADING, as points are deducted for not doing so.

Vocabulary Assignment Activities

6A Spelling:  The test for words in Unit 29 is Friday, May 9. Homework is due on Thursday, May 8.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers."
-- A Jewish Proverb

Thank You and God Bless,
Mrs. Kurtis
