September 2008

Where We Have Been

What a great class!  We have had a great two weeks together.  During the first week, our reading focus was on reviewing six of the main strategies we will be using throughout the year.  These strategies are as follows:
Predict/Infer
Phonics/Decoding
Monitor/Clarify
Questioning
Evaluating
Summarizing
This week we kicked off our "Off to Adventure" theme with the story Cliff Hanger.  During the week, we explored cause and effect.  Our language skill revolved around sentences and fragments.  In social studies, we have discussed school and community rules.  Our math focus was on place value.

Where We Are Going

Next week we will continue with our theme called "Off to Adventure".  During the theme we will be focusing on the comprehension skills of cause/effect, making inferences, and sequence of events.  In language, we will explore types of sentences, as well as how to avoid run-on sentences.  We are continuing with place value by concentrating on ordering numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest, as well as odd/even numbers.  During our exploration of rules, we will be discussing what a class without rules would be like.

Dates to Remember

Tuesday, September 9 - Book fair ends

Friday, September 26 - Mid-terms go home

Homework

Next week we will begin a regular week of homework.  I like to try to make homework as consistent as possible.  Therefore, the reading homework routine will be as follows:

Monday - Vocabulary worksheet - This will focus on the words from your child's small group story.
Tuesday - Skill worksheet - This sheet will reinforce the skill of the week.
Wednesday - Reread the anthology story with your child..
Thursday - Book in a Bag - Your child can take home their small group book and read to you or independently for 15 minutes.

Spelling

Nightly homework will be assigned and due the next day.  I plan to post words on my School Notes page the Friday before so you can get a headstart on homework.

Back to School Night

Our third grade team created a PowerPoint presentation with an overview of our curriculum for the first and second marking periods.  If you would like a copy of this, please send in your e-mail address and I will send it to you electronically.
