Today was the writing test for the first half of the day. I didn't start anything new today. The kids worked on real MANDALA's. It was a relaxing time for after the test.
I'll be out Wednesday and Thursday for a workshop. The kids will be introduced to Southern Asia and read and take notes on 13.1

Today the kids played their board games. It was a really fun day and the lesson was a success. I'm going to try to display them somewhere in the front of the school.

Today they continued with their games. They're doing a really neat job with these. I've decided that they will need Friday to work on these as well. Game day is Monday.

Today we started creating board games based on the animals in Africa. They will have 2 days in class to complete these and game day is on Friday. We're going "Green" with these games and I'm excited to see what the kids come up with.

We are finishing up our study of Africa by studying the animals in Africa. Today we watched a video an old student of mine brought back from South Africa. It's about a game reserve. It's very interesting. We'll spend the rest studying this.

Today we made 'Mandela Mandalas'. We created mandalas using words that descrive Nelson Mandela. These are due this Thursday.

Yesterday and today we watched the video "The Color of Friendship". This is a Disney video that is about S. Africa and apartheid. It's a wonderful culmination to our studies and the kids love it. (It's on the Disney channel this month if you're interested.)
Nothing was due this week. The kids were out Monday and Tuesday and I was out Wednesday with a sick kid. Next week we'll get back in the game.

Today we watched another Henry Louis Gates video called "Africa- A History Denied". They answered questions about the video and turned them in for credit.

Today the kids made Zulu bead necklaces. The Zulu people of South Africa use beads as a form of communication. The kids created their own code with colors, color combinations, and patterns. Then they were to decifer them with their friends. Look for them when they get home.

Today we started chapter 12 (Southern and Eastern Africa.) We did cookie archeology in class. The kids dug our "artifacts" (choclate chips) from cookies and theorized what they may have been used for. It was fun.

Today we went to the computer lab to do some research about life in school in South Africa, Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya. We will continue the research tomorrow. The kids will be writing an essay comparing life in Raleigh to life in Africa.

Today we started a mini-unit on Nigerian Folktales. The kids will work in groups for this. First, they will read 10 Nigerian folktales. Then they will complete a small packet of work related to the folktales. Then, they will turn one of the stories into a play and put on a show. We will work on this through the week. We will put on our shows next Tuesday and Wednesday.
This Friday is a teacher workday and Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Today we started a project. It's called a tourist srapbook page. Students are working with partners to research a country in Africa and "visit" that country. They will be working on these in class only through the week. I will have them displayed in the hall when they are completed.

Today we read and took notes on 10.1. This sections talks about the geography of Africa South of the Sahara. We will spend more time on this next week. It's an important part of learning about and understanding Africa.

Today we started on Africa. They labed and colored a map of Africa. This map divided the continent up into North, South, East, West, and Central Africa. We will spend a few months studying Africa.

We then read a poem called "Thread by Thread" today. This poem talks about hope and peace in the Middle East. They will each be creating a "quilt" square for me to sew into one huge blanket. (These quilt squares are made from paper.)

Today was a fun day. I gave the kids a hieroglyphic translation page and they made nametags for all teachers and staff in the school! I'm going to laminate them and pass them. Look for them on the doors when you're in the school. They did a really nice job and I think they enjoyed themselves.

Tomorrow is the last day I'm giving in class for this assignment. The rest will have to be done at home. These papers are due TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd.

I have not been good at updating lately. My apologies!
The kids have been working on creating their own "Societies" with their groups. They will begin presenting their work on Wednesday (hopefully). They are enjoying this project very much.
I handed out interims Friday. I also gave them a form the HAS to be signed by a parent or guardian regarding vidotaping permission for my National Boards. Please look for this and return it asap. Thanks so much.

Sorry about that. I'm not quite back in the habit of writing everyday. Monday, I went over the current event lesson and what is expected of them throughout the year with this assignment. I've pasted the sheet I gave them with all the due dates and the end of my schoolnotes page. I also taught them "how to read a newspaper", we went through the News & Observer section by section. Tuesday, I gave the kids another day in class for their Map Basics Packet. It's due today. Today (Wednesday), we started in the textbook. We read as a class Chapter 1 Section 1. I gave them their notes to complete after reading.

Today we started to work. I gave them a textbook scavanger hunt assignment to get them familiar with the textbook. Then they got a "Map Basics" packet. This is a guide the the basic tools used in geography. This is a lot of work, but they'll have two full days in class to work on it. It will be due Tuesday AFTER we go over it in class.
I'm not issuing textbooks to everyone this year. But I do have some to "checkout" if a student needs to take one home.

Last week we started to get to know each other. I enjoyed the "Getting to Know You" poster presentations. This week, we are going to start learning about the world.
Today Ms. Call (7th grade administrator), Mr. Crayton (principal), and Mrs. Inscoe (7th grade counselor) are in my room talking with the kids about the Wakefield Way and discipline procedures.
Current Events are a very important part of being a successful social studies student. We are living in a very historic time. Five hundred years from now, this era will be subjects of history books. Living in the United States is an honor and a privilege and a lot of responsibility. And it is your responsibility as a citizen of the United States, and a productive member of society, to be informed and knowledgeable of events around the world.
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR THE CURRENT EVENT WRITE-UPS?
1. The articles must be about Asia, Africa, or Australia, or the United States’ involvement in any of these continents.
2. The article should be taken from a reputable newspaper or from a reputable website. No tabloid related material is acceptable. The articles cannot be older then two weeks from the due date of your write-up. I will have newspapers in my classroom everyday.
3. You must attach your article to your current event write-up.
4. Current Events are due every other Friday. Below is a list of due dates for the year. If you turn your current event in late, you will only receive half credit. A current event is not “current” if it is late.

WEEK TWO:
MONDAY- Re-read the article, find two vocabulary words you are not familiar with and find the definition of the words, write them in a new sentence, and learn to spell them.
TUESDAY- Summarize the article using your own words on a piece of notebook paper. This will be your rough draft and must be turned in with your final write-up. You summary must be at least a 10-sentence paragraph with an introductory and a closing sentence. When writing your summary, be sure to tell who the article is about, where it occurred, when it occurred, and what exactly happened.
WEDNESDAY- Write your final draft of the Current Event sheet.
THURSDAY- Write a response to the article. This is where you may ask questions or voice an opinion. Check your work and get a parent signature!
FRIDAY- Turn in for credit. The current event sheet goes on top, then the rough draft, then the copy of the article. They are due by 3:00.
