Happy September,
I hope everyone had a nice long weekend and you're ready to jump feet first into a new week in first grade! This week we will begin our first units in reading and math. In reading, the books we will be sharing revolve around the theme of animals. Since we will be visiting the Lazy Five Ranch soon, this is a perfect time to be reading books about all the animals we may encounter on our trip. We will be reviewing words with the short a sound like can, cat, rap, etc. Also, the sight words we learned last year will be reviewed and new ones added. These will be included in the students' homework as spelling words and we will use them in our journal writing. Our new math unit reviews the numbers to 20 and beyond as we prepare for addition and subtraction as the year progresses. The children remember so much of what we learned last year that it's easy to just pick up where we left off. Good job parents, for keeping them focused over the summer. I will continue to update my site weekly, adding new websites and special dates on the calendar. You may email me with any questions. If you have any trouble contacting me, please send a note.
Thanks for all you do,
Mrs. Hinshaw
