Welcome Students and Parents to Mrs. Monday's Webpage!
Welcome 2008-2009 students to the second grade. We are all very excited to begin a new year of learning. Your child will change classes this year and learn subjects from three second grade teachers. Mrs. Kellie Haff will be teaching reading and comprehension skills, Mrs. Meridith Raynes will teach science and social studies, and I will teach math skills and computation. Each of us will teach writing skills to our homeroom classes. Bostian's Open House will be on August 21, 2008 from 3:00 to 6:00. Make sure to visit all of your second grade teachers on this day. Let's all get ready to "SADDLE UP FOR SUCCESS" this year. Please encourage your child to do his/her homework nightly to reinforce skills being taught at school. If you need to contact me, you can call the school and leave me a voicemail(ext.201) or email me at mondayaw@rss.k12.nc.us. I check my email on a daily basis and will be happy to help in any way I can. Check out the links below...there are some great math sites listed. Let's strive to make this a great school year in the second grade!
Love, Mrs. Monday

Below are some notes to refer to throughout the year for questions about math.
Homework Math homework is reinforcement for skills taught and is important for the success of your child. Therefore, I give a weekly skills sheet called, "Keeping Skills Sharp" (KSS) on Monday. The students have until Friday to turn it in. This sheet may contain skills that have already been covered in class or may be an introduction to new ones. I addition to the KSS, I also give homework to cover the current topic I am teaching that week. I usually try to send homework home on Tuesday and Thursday nights. This homework is to be returned the following day. Check your child's planner each night for the assignment.
Tests Math tests are given when a chapter or topic has been taught. A review sheet will be sent home for your child to study (this will count for a homework assignment). "Study for test" will also be written in your child's planner to inform you of the upcoming test. After the test is graded it is sent home in the homwork folder to be signed. The signed test is to be returned the following day.
Addition and Subtraction Facts In second grade students are required to know their addition and subtraction facts. This is a difficult task for many students. Therefore, studying these facts on a regular basis is necessary. I suggest flash cards. They are available at several stores, including the Dollar Tree. Addition and subtractions fact quizzes will be given twice a week to help the students learn them. Once again, practicing these at home is very important.
Accelerated Math Students will also participate in a program called, "Accelerated Math." This program is computer generated and is a great way to master necessary math skills. A packet is printed out and put into a folder with a scan card (fill in the bubble for the correct answer.) This folder stays at school and is worked on at certain times during the week. When completed these math packets will be sent home in Thursday folders for review, along with corrections.
