~WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING IN CLASS~

**For full information on the 3rd grade curriculum, visit www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum/ncscos**

~Social Studies & Science~

Our science units include the following topics:
*bones, muscles, and joints
*the sun and moon system
*plants
*soil

In social studies, students will go to Mrs. Earnhardt's class to learn about:
*government and citizenship
*agriculture/food production
*map skills
*our exact location through a unit called "Where in the World Are We?"

~WRITING~

We will be preparing your child for the 4th grade state writing test. Third grade students will take a local county writing test in March.

~MATH CLASS INFORMATION~

We will begin the year by learning about place value, value, and the many ways to write a number.  This will build an excellent foundation for understanding all of the other topics we will cover this year, which include:
*multipication
*division
*general problem solving
*multi-step problems
*graphing
*geometry
*measurement
...and many, many more!!!

Your child will switch classes for math and will find out who their math teacher is within the first two weeks of school...
******************
SOLVE is a math strategy that students will use in math class and for homework throughout the year.  It is an excellent way to "train the brain" to look for important information in a word problem and to select the BEST way to solve the problem, as well as figure out OTHER WAYS to solve it, if needed.
Solve the problem--read it 3 times.
Organize the information.  Underline what is important.
Line up a plan.  Which strategy would work best for this problem?
Verify with action.  Use the strategy you selected to show your work.
Evaluate & examine. Does your answer make sense?  Why???

~Reading Class Information~

In reading, students will be transitioning from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."  We will cover many genres and skills this year in order to prepare students for the end-of-year state reading test.  From fairy tales, realistic fiction, non-fiction, & novels--we will read it all!

*****************

Students will learn how to use QAR/RUNNERS when completing questions about a selection. Here are the four types of Question/Answer Relationship ?s:
RIGHT THERE ?s:
Are right there in the text; very easy to find
THINK & SEARCH ?s:
Are in the text, but are in different paragraphs or pages
AUTHOR & ME ?s:
Students must read what the author writes and make a decision based on what they can figure out--not directly in the text
ON MY OWN ?s:
Students can answer these without even reading the story by using their own experiences and knowledge.
Runners stands for:
Read the title and predict
Underline the key words in the ?
Number the paragraphs
Now as you read
Enclose key words
Reread questions
Select the best answer

~Homework Information~

Students will write their homework in their agendas at the beginning of each week. These are to be signed by a parent each night. **Homework assignments will vary from time to time and will need to be checked daily by parents/guardians.**

Reading:
Students will be expected to read 20 min.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, which will increase as the year goes on. On Thursdays, students will write about the book they have been reading through a half-page journal entry, which should be written in their homework notebooks.  **This will be a reading grade.**

Math Facts:
At the beginning of the year, students will study the addition math facts until they are fluent with their answers (Mon, Tue, Wed, and Thur). By November, students will study multiplication math facts daily until they pass the 50-question cumulative multiplication with a 90% or better. The cumulative test will be given every Friday until the EOG tests.

Spelling:
On Tuesdays & Wednesdays, students will have spelling homework. On Tuesday, students will write each spelling word 3 times each. On Wednesday, students will use each word in a sentence. Spelling tests will take place on Fridays. **Spelling sentences will be a WRITING grade.**

SOLVE with Math:
Students will have SOLVE homework on Mondays and Wednesdays later in the year.  See the math information section above for an full explanation of SOLVE.
