Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year!

      Mrs. Mashburn and  I are so excited to be back in the classroom this August.  I hope you and your family have had a safe and restful summer vacation.  We have so many exciting  opportunities for learning this year!    Accelerated Reader books will start coming home with your child the first week of school.  The students get to choose their own books on their level.  When your child has read  the book to you , please ask some questions about the book.  Then the student will take a computer test on the book.  In my class when a student makes 3 100%s in a row on their AR tests they get to go to the Treasure Chest which is filled with books.  The student gets to pick and keep a book from me.  I can't tell you how important nightly reading is to your child's reading growth and progress. Please continue to support this program. 

 We will also be using the Accelerated Math program in our room.  This program gives your child an opportunity to practice math skills that have already been presented in class.  The program helps the student think about math concepts in different ways.

Our writing program, Writers' Workshop,  will let your child  choose topics to write about.  Stories from students'personal journals may then be  selected to be published in a book.  When your child publishes  a book they will bring it home to share with your family.  Then the book will be returned to school to be placed in our classroom library.  At the end of the year all books will be sent home.

I am also very excited about the  renovations on the Nature Trail.  The outdoors has always been my favorite classroom.  We will take science and writing lessons outside whenever possible.
