2. Helen S. and Julius L. Goldman Scholarship ($4,000-$1,000 per year) Female students. Considering extra-curricular activities, financial need, references, and the applicant’s statement of her personal aspirations and educational goals. Deadline to Mr. Connolly March 1.
3. Rowan Business Alliance Julian C. Johnson Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) Demonstrated leadership in school and volunteer community service. 3.0 Unweighted GPA and interview. Deadline to Mr. Connolly March 14.
4. Rowan County Masonic Scholarship. Open to any resident of Rowan County who is pursuing an education beyond high school. A handwritten essay and two letters of recommendation are required. Deadline to Mr. Connolly by March 21.
5. Salisbury-Rowan Retired School Personnel Scholarship ($1,000) Students attending a 4 year institution with Education as an intended major. Also based on academic achievement, initiative and financial need. Deadline to Mr. Connolly February 24.
6. Rowan Salisbury Association of Educational Office Professionals ($750) Students attending a 2 or 4 year institution with Business or Education as an intended major. Also based on academic achievement, initiative and financial need. Deadline to Mr. Connolly March 17.
7. Brad Patrick Memorial Scholarship ($1000) Scholarship, community and school involvement and financial need will be used to determine a winner. Application in guidance or at www.christianaelc.org Deadline March 1.

1. E. R. & Lillian B. Dimmette Scholarship Renewable award ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 annually. Eligibility requirements include a 2.5+ GPA, substantial financial need, and school and community involvement. Preference is given to students whose parents do not have a college degree. 6. PFLAG National Scholarships Program (Several $2500) scholarships available to students who have supported the GLBT through advocacy, community involvement, or leadership. www.pflag.org. Deadline March 15.
7. Bob R. McGuire Scholarship ($1000) Available to students whose parents are members of the NC Child Support Council or a client of the child support program. Deadline April 30.
8. AMVETS Americanism Contest. 6-12th graders. This year’s essay is “My Favorite American Hero”. Information listed on www.amvetsnc.org under Americanism. Deadline March 30.
9. Jagannathan Scholarship. ($3500) Student who will attend a public NC university. Based on financial need, GPA, rank, SAT and leadership. Applications available at www.cfnc.org. Deadline for CSS Profile to be completed is February 8th (early submission is encouraged). Scholarship due to Guidance by February 8, 2008.
10. North Carolina State USBC Association Inc. Youth Scholarship. ($1,000) Must be a current member of the North Carolina United States Bowling Congress Association or a member within the last three years. Applications at www.ncbowls.com. Deadline March 15.
11. NC Student Scholarship/Loan for Health, Science & Math. Based on major, GPA, and financial need. Must complete the FAFSA. Information and application at www.cfnc.org/hsm.
12. NC Nurse Scholars Program. Applications and information available at www.cfnc.org/nsp. Deadline is February 28 for 4 year schools and May 3 for 2 year programs.
13. NC High School Athletic Association Clary Medal. $1000 award based on athletic participation, extra-curricular activities and community service. Applications available at www.nchsaa.org. Deadline is February 9, 2008.
14. Matthew Graziadei Achievement Award. Presented to a senior with a disability who has demonstrated determination, excellence and accomplishment. Deadline March 14.

Many of you have been accepted to schools. Please come by and share your good news with us. Some of you are still waiting to get on the ball. Now is the time to get those applications for schools and scholarships in. Some schools have February 1 deadlines.

1. Crumley and Associates – Crib to College Scholarship. Awards five $1,000 scholarships and a laptop to outstanding seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Application www.crumleyandassociates.com/crib-to-college.php. Deadline is March 15.
2. NC Prospective Teacher Scholarship/Loan. Available to NC residents who have chosen to pursue a career in education. Scholarship/Loans range from $1,200 (two year)to $2,500 (four year). www.CFNC.org click on Merit Scholarrships. Deadline is February 28.
3. NC Head Start Scholarship. Available to a former Head Start student graduating this year. $1000. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline is January 18.
4. NC Society of Accountants Scholarship. Available for students who are showing a firm interest in accounting. $500. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline is April 15.
5. SEANC Scholarships. Awards from $500 to $1,000 for dependents of members of the State Employees Association of North Carolina (Not the Credit Union). Scholarships are either merit or financial need based and qualify to two- or four-year colleges. Application can be downloaded at www.seanc.org or are in guidance. Due Mr. Connolly April 4th.
6. NC Division of Veteran Affairs Scholarship Program. Financial assistance to students who are children of military veterans. There are several classifications and qualifying criteria. For more information call 704-216-8100 or 336-766-1496.
7. FFA Scholarship Program. Numerous scholarships for students who plan to pursue a career in agriculture. Information and application available at www.ffa.com. Click on “awards programs” and then “scholarships.” Deadline is February 15th for most.
8. Ronald McDonald House Charities. Awards $1,000+ to seniors who are enrolling in a two-year or four-year accredited college or university. Based on academic achievement and community involvement, financial need is part of the qualifying criteria. Applications are available in guidance or at www.rmhc.org. Application deadline is February 15th.
9. Best Buy Scholarship. $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to two students living within 50 miles of each Best Buy store. Nationally 16 students will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Scholarship based on academic achievement and volunteer work. Application available at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships. Deadline February 15th.
10. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) recognizes outstanding athletes who also demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community service. Applications and official rules are at www.sammy.bodybymilk.com
11. Alpha Delta Kappa has several scholarships available for males and females. Also ADK has a scholarship for people considering a fine art major. Deadline Feb 2. See Mr. Connolly.
12. Imagine America Scholarship: Three $1000 scholarships for students planning on attending career college (ECPI or NASCAR Tech). Students must meet the normal admissions requirements of the participating career college as well as the Career Training Foundation’s selection guidelines. www.imagine-america.org
FINANCIAL AID 101
Everything starts with the FAFSA. ?The Free Application for Federal Student Aid. ?Any student planning on going to a technical, 2-year or 4-year college should complete the FAFSA form before April of the senior year. The FAFSA is available at colleges, high schools and on-line (recommended; will cut the amount of time it takes to process your application). The FAFSA cannot be completed until after students and their parents/guardians have completed their taxes. Once the FAFSA is completed, the federal government determines your Expected Family Contribution (EFC); Colleges use this information to determine your financial aid. You must indicate on the FAFSA form which colleges will receive this information. Financial aid may be in the form of grants (Pell, State and other), loans, scholarships or work-study and typically, financially needy families will get more aid. For colleges that have low tuition costs (RCCC for example), financial aid may cover all tuition, books and travel expenses. You should apply for a PIN number today (1st step in financial aid process) visit www.pin.ed.gov
