This year Millbridge has become an IMPACT school. IMPACT is a collaboration model developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to provide guidelines for technology and media integration with classroom instruction. The primary goals of IMPACT are:
Media and technology programs focus on student achievement.
Approach to instruction is learner-centered
Collaboratively planned lessons
Lessons are authentic, engaging, enriched by high-quality resources and current technologies
Teachers will be planning collaboratively with the media coordinator and the technology facilitator as well as other enhancement teachers in the school. Students and teachers will have flexible access to both the media center and the computer labs so that Project Based units can be implemented.
In preparation for IMPACT twelve teachers from Millbridge attended a weeklong workshop this past summer. QUEST (Quality Educational Strategies and Technologies) allowed the teachers an opportunity to experience many authentic, technology-rich lessons. Teachers utilized many technology tools, e.g. cameras, Classroom Performance Systems, ActivBoards, Digital Microscope, document cameras, and worked with a variety of software. Lessons modeled activating, cognitive and summarizing strategies, designed to engage all learners. The week ended with a collaborative planning session where teachers began the process of planning a project-based learning activity to do with their students. Teachers will use the strategies from this summer's workshop as they implement IMPACT during this school year.
