Welcome to First Grade! Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Teter
We are so excited to being a new school year with 21 wonderful first graders. We have had a great first week and look forward to an awesome year!
Thank you, parents for so promptly and generously sending in supplies and materials for our class.
Homework
As I’m sure you are already aware, our first homework assignments and spelling words have been sent home. Homework assignments consist of a short daily spelling or writing and a math activity. Homework will be sent home each Friday and all homework for the week will be due the following Friday. Our spelling words are taken from the Rowan-Salisbury School System First Grade High Frequency word list. Five words will be introduced each week. At a later time, we will include words with similar spelling patterns.
Reading
We do lots of reading in the first grade! You will be amazed at the growth your child will make in his reading this year. Students will begin bringing home library books this week. At this point in the year, students may choose their own books. Because of this, your child’s book may be too difficult for him to read. Parents, please take the time to read your child’s book to him and let him find and read words that he knows. Later in the year, students will be expected to select and independently read library books. Even when students become independent readers, they still benefit from being read to. It is important for students to regularly be exposed to a variety of texts and genres.
Writing
We will begin our Writer's Workshop program soon.
Math
We have been working on numbers, number words, and comparing numbers. We will soon begin working on adding numbers to ten. In math, we use lots of manipulatives and a variety of strategies to help students understand concepts.
