Welcome to second grade where a world of learning and adventure awaits you! Students will be taught responsibility, becoming independent, good work and study skills, citizenship and acceptable classroom behavior. My desire is for your child to develop a love for learning and feel an important part of our school environment. With parents and teachers working together as a team, I am sure this will be a rewarding year for your child!

What's Newsworthy?
Behavior Bucks: Your child will have the opportunity to earn or lose behavior bucks on a daily basis depending on behavior. This concept is to encourage your child to follow classroom expectations and in turn, be rewarded in the process. It also teaches economics by allowing children to purchase items with their money at a weekly auction. If anyone would like to donate items for our auctions, places like the Dollar Store, Wal-Mart and Dollar General have items that the children love!
Agendas: Agendas are given to children the first week of school. Included in the agenda will be spelling words, homework assignments, and behavior stamps for each day. Parents need to initial these daily. Students will keep their homework, reading logs and other important information in the clear pocket located in the front of the agenda. Please check your child's agenda on a daily basis.
DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment): By the end of the 4th Quarter of second grade, each student needs to be at a DRA level 28. This assessment can be reinforced at home by listening to your child read orally and questioning for comprehension. Ask questions using who? what? when? where? why? and how? Have the problem and solution identified. Allow your child to see you interested in what they are reading.
Accelerated Reader: This reading program is designed to strengthen comprehension skills as it reinforces all developmental stages of reading. All teachers are required to use the school's guidelines in implementing this program. Individual goals are set and rewards are given quarterly to students meeting their goals. Additional information may be obtained from me.
Reading: Students will be involved in whole group, small group and individual reading sessions. Phonics, word attack skills and comprehension skills will be implemented in these sessions. I love reading and my goal is to develop this love in your child.
Writing: We will take a plunge in a program called Writer's Workshop this year. We will start in a simple manner and will work into becoming story writers. Hopefully, your child will see how easy it is to put their thoughts on paper.
Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list each week. You will be able to find these in their agendas and under Flashcards on this webpage. They need to know how to read, spell and use each word in a sentence. A test will be given each Friday. We will begin with 2nd grade High Frequency words.
Math: In order for your child to expand on math skills at an appropriate rate, please continue studying addition and subtraction facts at home. This is a must in order to provide adequate growth. You will be kept informed as we introduce new concepts.
Social Studies/Science: Both areas will be integrated in our themes as much as possible. Stay tuned to some very exciting units!
