Some suggestions for helping your child with their reading at home.

1) With your child, choose four pieces of writing
from the following genres: fiction, nonfiction,
myths, poems, fantasy, biography,
autobiography, science fiction, tall tales,
supernatural tales. A language arts textbook
is a good resource to find different types of
writing.

Read the four selections (or parts of them, if
they are long). While reading, ask your child
what strategies s/he uses when reading these
kind of texts.

Examples:Pre-reading strategies: skimming,
looking at bold print.

Questioning: Why am I
reading this book? What is this book about?
Figuring out confusing parts: reread, look up
words, ask, use context clues.

2) With your child, brainstorm different strategies
a good reader would use when reading a
confusing part of the text.

Examples: Rereads, creates a mental/physical
picture, looks up words in the dictionary, looks
on the Internet for more information, uses
context clues, asks questions, etc.

On a piece of construction paper, have your
child create a poster listing the reading
strategies you brainstormed. Have him/her
illustrate and decorate the poster.

Choose a section from a textbook. Read the
section. When s/he encounters a confusing
part, have her/him use some of the strategies
from the poster.

Choose a book, at your child's reading level,
that s/he has not read. Together read the first
chapter. Have your child answer the following
questions in a notebook/journal.

1) What do you think this book is about?
2) Who is the main character?  What do you
know about him/her?
3) What is the setting?
4) What do you think is going to happen?

When finished discuss the answers. Have your
child use this journal as s/he reads. Continue
recording inferences and predictions about the
characters' choices/motivations and the
upcoming action.
