What we're currently studying
Reading: We will begin the year by reviewing the sight words that were mastered in first grade. We will quickly move to our first story in the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series titled "Dragon Gets By." It is a fun story about a dragon that goes shopping. We will discuss this story, as well as other silly stories, then move on to a study of poetry. The students will be in small groups for guided reading. We will read the stories at least two times each, and we will also listen to the stories on the CD.
Writing: We will begin the year by identifying parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives). Then we will practice writing sentences with a subject and a predicate (the "who" and the "what" of a sentence). This work will help us to prepare to launch the Writing Workshop around September 8th. We will use a variety of literature to show how authors use pictures and words to tell a story.

Math: For the first nine weeks of school, we will review place value for numbers up to 100. We learn more about the hundreds place and connect a number with its model and its word form. We will also read numbers, compare and order numbers, estimate, and identify odd and even numbers. We will also review addition and subtraction using multiple strategies.

Social Studies: We will begin the year by learning what it means to be a responsible citizen. We will also discuss the upcoming 2008 Presidental Election between Mr. Barack Obama and Mr. John McCain. We have a lot to learn about our country's two candidates for president!

Science: Our first unit in science this year will be about the weather. We will observe the changes in our weather as we move from the hot days of summer to the cool, crisp days of fall.
