Weaver's Watermelons

We're Growing Great Readers

2008-2009

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer.  Be safe, enjoy, and most of all rest.  A great year is ahead and coming quickly.

Love,

Mrs. Weaver

Important Dates to know...

Orientation: August 21st 4-6pm

First day of school:  August 25th

No School/Labor Day:  September 1st

Progress Reports:  September 24th

08-09 School Supplies
(see attachment at the bottom of this page)
My class will also need a 2 inch 3 ring binder with a clear plastic pouch on the front cover.  Your child will also need a package of clear pocket page protectors.  We will be creating a North Carolina Scrapbook.  It will take all year to create and is a terrific memory of North Carolina History.

FOURTH GRADE RULES:

Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself

Come to school prepared with a positive attitude

•Respect yourself and others at all times

Raise your hand and be courteous to everyone

Students will be rewarded with compliments, postive notes and/or phone calls home, fun Friday, plus valuable tickets. Your fourth grader will use a "ticket exchange" positive behavior and attitude system. Students can earn tickets for various reasons and the value of the ticket will also vary. These tickets can be turned in for many different rewards throughout the year. See below:

10 tickets: pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners

25 tickets: trip to the picnic box treasures

50 tickets: 20 minutes of extra computer time, sit at teacher's desk for

a day, homework pass for 1 subject, book cover

75 tickets: eat lunch with a friend, wirte with a pen for a day, sit with a

friend for a day

150 tickets: Free ice cream, bring a special something to school to show and tell

250 tickets: Lunch off campus with your teacher (must be scheduled), teacher to bake you homemade chocolate chip cookies (my mom's recipe)

Consequences

Students will receive strikes for inappropriate behavior. When a student breaks a rule a strike will be given and documented in the student's agenda. We work on a three strikes your are out philosophy, meaning no more chances.  Four strikes will keep a student from

taking part in Fun Friday. Students with 4 strikes will spend Fun Friday in detention.

1 strike= warning

2 strikes=10 minutes of time out/silent lunch

3 strikes=lose privileges and a note or a phone call home

4 strikes= no fun friday/possible write up/visit to office

ACCELERATED READING
DO YOU KNOW YOUR ZPD?
Our school wide theme AGAIN this year is a focus on agriculture, and "Growing Great Readers." We have lots of great end of quarter rewards planned that tie beautifully with our theme. Our students have to reach 100% of his/her personal goal at 85% accuracy or better  in order to attend the celebration. Be sure your child is reading on their level and working hard to meet the personal goal designed for him/her.

FIRST QUARTER 50% CUT OFF:  TBA

FIRST QUARTER 100% CUT OFF:  TBA

50% club:

100% Club

Above and Beyond Club

All students that meet their 100% personal goal with 85% accuracy will be rewarded with...

This year 4th graders will participate in a state writing test in March.  We will work all year preparing students to write personal and imaginative narratives.   Writing is my all time favorite thing to teach.  We will bring writing to life as much as possible and have fun "exploding moments!"

THE 5 FEATURES OF GOOD WRITING:

Focus

Organization

Support and Elaboration

Style

Conventions

You can help at home by telling stories of your past with your child.  Make up stories, share true stories, and mix them up.  Spruce up stories with made up parts here and there and ALWAYS be sure to use your senses to paint a picture.

You will receive more detailed information throughout the year.
