Welcome to Mrs. Austin's AIG Class!

.

Welcome back!  I hope you had a great summer!  I am looking forward to an exciting year.

Fourth Grade:

Fourth Grade Schedule:  Reading: 9:30 - 10:45
 Math : 10:45 - 11:45

This year AIG Math was added to the fourth grade curriculum. Parents, I will be sending an addendum to the DEP for you to sign.
Be sure to read the 4th Grade Welcome Back Letter.  It provides more specific information concerning the year.

Homework Policy:
Your child will be expected to copy down assignments from the board and return them the next day.

************************************************************************ Fifth Grade Schedule

Reading: 8:15 - 9:30
Math: 12:35 - 1:45

Be sure to read the 5th Grade Welcome Back Letter.  It contains some specific information that you will need to know.

The 5th grade Language Art's class will attend a Shakespeare Play, "Much Ado About Nothing," in High Point in September. More information will be coming home soon concerning this special event.

This year, I will be teaching both the Language Arts and Math curriculum for 5th grade.  This will include lots of fun novels and a new math program called "Singapore Math."  Your child will find this year fast paced as well as challenging.

Homework Policy:

Please copy your assignments from the board into your agenda.
Most assignments are due the next day.

Third Grade

For the first part of the year, until I identify students, I will be visiting the third grade classrooms and providing whole group lessons.  The students will meet Dudley, the Detective and learn about deductive logic and logical reasoning.  After students are identified for AIG, they will come to my class every Wednesday and Thursday from 1:45 - 2:25.

K-2 Nurturing Program
This year, I will be providing a K-2 Nurturing Program.  I will be visiting the K-2 classrooms. This program has a two- tier approach in which the AIG teacher and the classroom teacher work together to develop high interest and challenging activities. Students that demonstrate outstanding aptitude during the whole group lessons are invited to participate in more challenging follow up lessons.

Dates to Remember

August 25:  First day of school
September 1: Labor Day Holiday
September 24: Mid-terms issued
October 24: End of first quarter
October 27: Teacher workday
November 4: Teacher workday
November 5: First Report Card issued

Remember that my policy is to subtract ten points for late work. Hopefully, that policy will not have to be implemented. However, listed below are a few hints that might help with getting the homework in on time.

*Complete the homework soon after getting home in the afternoon.

* Have a designated place to work on homework each day.

* Place completed assignments in the book bag as soon as it is finished.

* If your child forgot to bring home a book needed to complete the assignment, bring him/her back to school to get the book. (The new math book is on line.) I am usually here until 3:30 or 4:00.

* Call a friend. Please don't expect me to make allowances for your child's failure to do his/her homework unless there was an emergency.

AR goals will be set by your child's homeroom teacher. Continue to encourage your child to read each night. Reading should become a habit that they enjoy. We strongly recommend that children read within his/her independent level as indicated by the S.T.A.R. Test. If your child is reading a book below his/her level, he/she will not make adequate progress. We will no longer count a book that is below his/her reading level. I want your child to be successful in reading as I am sure you do. Please help me encourage your child to read between his/her assigned level. (If there is a book that he/she really wants to read out of his/her range, I will occasionally make an exception to the rule.) This year's AR reading has a Space theme. Please email me to let me know that you are utilizing this site. I would love to hear from you. Again, I have enjoyed getting to know each of the children. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions. I am usually there until 3:30 p.m.
