Here are some things that we will be learning:

  • Math--shapes, both plane and solid; meaningful counting to 30;  rote counting to 100; sorting and classifying; alike and different; direction words; recognizing and creating patterns; number recognition 0-30, in and out of order; more and fewer; solid figures and parts of shapes; equal and unequal parts; probability; symmetry; coin recognition and value; standard and non-standard measurement; time; tallying; counting by twos, fives, and tens; graphing; money;  ordinal numbers first through tenth; calculator terminology, and so much more!
  • MUCH of our EVERYDAY MATH program is "hands-on."  Your child may not bring home lots of papers, but that does not mean we haven't been busy!!
  • We will be adding one and subtracting one from numbers through 10;
    We will learn the -, + and = signs.
  • Language Arts--Letter recognition, sound, and handwriting, which letters are capital and which are lower case; long and short vowel sounds; reading vocabulary--title, author, illustrator, character, setting, detail, period, question mark, exclamation mark, predicting, retelling with proper sequence of events; title page, selection, capital, lower case, quotation marks, pointing to each word as a story is read; difference between a letter and a word; thinking maps--circle, flow, bubble, double bubble, tree, bridge; letter/word differentiation; writing with sound spelling; "sounding out" simple words; color words.  BASIC SIGHT WORD LIST:  the, in, he, as, at, of, is, was, with, be, and, you, for, his, this, a, that, on, they, have, to. it, are, I, from  YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ AND WRITE THESE WORDS.
  • OUR PHONICS PROGRAM IS CALLED "ZOOPHONICS." Your child will learn a signal and sound for each letter before learning the letter name and will learn the lower case letters before learning the capitals.     Each letter has a corresponding animal which aids in letter/sound recall. It's fun and exciting!

  • General Studies--Rules & expectations; calendar terms--days of the week, months, year, seasons, weather words; left to right progression in reading and writing; left and right; coloring; cutting; following oral directions; computer terminology and skills; drawing with detail and setting;story retelling with proper sequence of events
      Regarding Homework:  PLEASE supervise your child, but do not do it for him.  Flashcards at the end of this page will give some ideas for each letter of the alphabet when the homework requires your child to cut or draw pictures. (Click on FLASHCARDS
at the top of the web page.)

How can parents help?
  • Shoe-tying
  • Return agendas (signed!), library books, Thurs. folders, homework (done by the student!), etc., promptly.
  • Put ALL money in a labeled envelope every day.
  • Help your child practice his name with only a capital letter at the beginning.
  • Practice all letters correctly. Use flash cards for identification of both capital and lower case letters as well as sounds.
  • Allow cutting practice at home.  Provide your child with scissors, crayons, pencils, paper for writing and drawing practice, books, magazines, etc.
  • Ask lots of questions and know what your child is studying at school. READ! READ! READ!  Discuss what you read.  Ask thought questions.  Have your child retell the story in proper sequence and identify characters.
  • Give plenty of opportunities for counting
  • Never believe your child when you ask what he did at school and he says,Nothing!
