Character Education

Having good social skills is an important childhood building block.  If children know how to behave in any social setting it will lead to positive self-concept as well as well rounded social activities.
Take a minute to talk as a family about how to show social skills at home and at school.  Listening, following rules, being responsible and having good manners are just a few examples of how we can all show good social skills. No one likes to play with a classmate who doesn’t follow social guidelines.  Ask what other examples your family can come up with and maybe set up a reward system.  If when caught showing good social skills within the family your child gets a small reward they are often more likely to put forth an effort.  After awhile it becomes part of their character, rewarded or not.

Tip of the Month

To start the year off with good study habits here are 5 ways to help your child with homework.
1. Make a point to state that homework is just as improtant as the work a student does at school.
2. Set a regular time for homework to be done.  Take into consideration your childs activity level, they have been in a classroom for most of the day.  Also remember to plan for some breaks.
3. Have paper, pencils, and other supplies available.
4.  Have a quiet, clean, well-lit place to study.  Perferably a place away from TV and toys.
5. Spot check the work.  Make homework the students responsibility, yet make sure they understand and take the time to do the work right.
