~What's Going On
This Week~

Weekly Writing Journal: We
have been working with a weekly writing journal. On Mondays, I
will give the students a writing prompt. They need to write in their
journal answering this prompt during the week. They may write at school
or home, but the journal is due Fridays.

  • Students must write 3 paragraphs minimum
  • Each paragraph should have 4-5 sentences
  • Grading will be based on quality based  on :
    • Quality when compared to their own writing
    • Completion -- did they do it and do it right?
    • Staying on topic/Focus

This week's Prompt:

All students are working on essays. The persuasive essay was due this past Monday -- students who have not turned this in need to get it in ASAP. Once finished with the persuasive essay, they are to finish the comparative essay we started a few weeks ago.

Past Prompts:
4/14-4/18
-- Everyone needs help sometimes. Describe a time when someone helped
you. What did they help you with? How did they help? What was the
outcome? (did you get something done quicker? Did you finish something?
Were they supportive and help you solve a problem? etc.)
4/7-4/11 -- No prompt this week! I'm reading everyone's journals for report cards!

Reading Log:
We are also starting to keep reading logs. The students need to be the ones filling out their logs and the parents need to sign them AFTER they are completed. Students need to read for a minimum of 25 minutes every night, then write 4 sentences on what they read (minimum of 5 words per sentence). Sentences should summarize with reflection:

What was the story about? What does it remind you of? Did you like it? Why or why not?
The primary source of their reading should be AR books, however, books from home, newspaper articles, magazines, A couple of chapters each night from a book, etc...

Language Arts

This week we start our new theme (One Land, Many trails) about people who lived long ago in North America. The trails to and across the United States have seen many travelers.
