Season’s Greetings from Title I.  The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year.  Even positive experiences such as the bustle of shopping, the excitement of school presentations, the fun of family get-togethers, etc., can be stressful for all of us.  We would like to remind you of a few things that will hopefully help to de-stress your life a little.

First is the importance of routine.  All children in elementary school (and ALL human beings, actually) benefit from having a routine as the backbone of their evenings.  When children know what to expect and when to expect it, as well as what is expected of them, they are happier and better able to cope with life.  Please remember this and continue to allow time for homework, reading, and a proper amount of rest on a daily basis.

Second is the importance of communication.  Please continue to talk with  (not AT) your children daily about the things going on in their lives, and REALLY take interest in what they wish to share with you.  Eye contact is very important, as children want you to listen with your eyes as well as your ears.  You can discuss things that go on around this time of year, for a start.  Let the child talk about the feelings caused by holiday and seasonal activities as well as everyday events.

Third, remember the importance of the gifts you give your child every day.  We, as parents, are SUPER-POWERFUL examples for our children at all times.  (Whew!  What a responsibility!)  When we handle a tough situation in a positive way, we have given our children a gift that will encourage them to look for peaceful solutions to problems.  When we maintain a positive outlook even when life is not giving us what we want or expected, we are teaching our children to have faith in what tomorrow may bring.  Remember as you shop for the latest fads the kids have seen on television, that the most important things we can ever give our children aren’t “things” at all, but ways of thinking about, and dealing with, life.

    Have a great Christmas season!

    Ms. Campbell and Ms. Livengood
