Important Dates: Aug. 22- OPEN HOUSE 3:30-6:00 Aug. 25- FIRST DAY of school Sept. 1- Labor Day - NO SCHOOL! Sept. 2- First day of AR Sept. 16- Fall Pictures Open House @ 6:30 Sept. 19- Field Trip - Stories by the Millstream (1pm) Sept. 24+ Book Fair
Reading: We are reading 45 minutes a day (30 mins school and 15 mins home) in AR books. Be sure to check your child's folder daily to see book titles, book levels and scores. Did your child meet their weekly AR point goal at 85%? The front of the log will help you to know if your child meet their goal. Please remember that you can ask your child all kinds of comprehension questions about the book they read to you. This will help them when they take their AR test. Your child may have two library books at a time. One must be AR and the second one can be AR or it can be a second book of interest that is not AR. All library books can be returned daily if finished with them.
**The goal for first quarter AR is to be reading between 2.0 - 2.3 with fluency and passing AR tests at 85% or higher. This will vary based on your child's individual levels.
Our class has a second literacy block other than AR that involves reading various genres of literature in a variety of ways. We focus on reading comprehension skills, writing, phonetics, and other skills.
Math: The focus for first quarter will be on number sense. Students will work on modeling numbers in various ways and reading and writing numbers and number words up to 100. Students will order and compare numbers and begin to explore place value. We will also be exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction and developing strategies to add and subtract. We will also begin problem solving. **Students should have mastery of addition facts. Please help them use their flash cards nightly for true mastery of facts. This will help other math concepts in the future.
Science- ANIMALS The students will focus on the stages of animal life cycles and their needs.
Social Studies- Families & Communities The students will focus on citizenship, families, and communities. They will also discuss change over time in a community.
Spelling- Students will learn many strategies and rules to decode and sound out words when reading and writing, (blends, digraphs, synonyms, antonyms) and work on reading and spelling high frequency words. STUDENTS MUST WORK IN THEIR SPELLING LOGS DAILY!
Remember to look over your child's Tuesday Folder and go over any concern areas.
