Monday - We are reviewing for testing purposes, lesson 16 in Word Skills, Students have been asked to complete the crossword puzzle on page 58 in their Word Skills workbook.
Many rough drafts have been completed; some are still outstanding. Please ask your student the status of their rough draft.
We are reading "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift; students are asked to answer three questions.
1.What is Swift's proposal?
2. What details make is "outrageous"?
3. Why are the landlords the best recipients of this proposal?
Tuesday: We will discuss the "proposal."
Students will practice with Word Skills.
We will read an excerpt from Alexander Pope's Essay on Man.
Students for homework, memorize two lines (assigned) from Essay on Man.
Wednesday: We will read in class some definitions from Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language. Make posters to advertise Johnson's dictionary. Make up definitions to some current slang words. Practice word skills lesson 16.
Thursday - View one more episode of Gulliver's Travels. Discuss historical context of Restoration. Review three authors. Check multiple choice viewing guide on Swift. Review for unit test.
Friday - Unit test. Homework - final rough drafts reviewed and corrected.

Nov. 17-21
Monday - Most rough drafts returned. Homework is to finish crossword puzzle on page 74 for review of word skills, lesson 18.
Tuesday - More notes on grammatical edits of rough drafts. Focus on essential question: how is Swift's satire different from Chaucer's. Groups create scenario of some imaginary society to visit which allows satiris commentary on some aspect of American life. Requirements: use satire, verbal irony, hyperbole. Homework read excerpt from Boswell's Life of Johnson.
Wednesday - Freewrite on what someone would write about in your life -- what would be interesting? Watch Laputa episode from Gulliver's Travels. Discuss the satire in this episode. Who is being satirized; how? Homework: Write a two page satire on Highschool drama.
Thursday - Review all authors of Restoration and historical Context. Jeopardy game for review.
Friday - Unit Test. Weekend homework. Read introduction to Romantic Time Period. Thanksgiving assignment: Frankenstein.
