*****Important dates*****
Civic Center Student Art Show ...April 25th & 26th
Waterworks Visual Arts Center Student Art Show.....May 3-18.  Reception for participants and families is May 3rd @2:30-4:00 at the Waterworks.

This year in ART, all grades will be learning and using the ELEMENTS OF ART
Line, Shape,Form,Space,Color,Value & Texture
and the
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Pattern,Rhythm,Balance,Emphasis, Harmony,Variety & Unity.

Kindergarten & Gr. 1  learned about SPACE (the horizon line) and did sequencing in a cartooning assignment about "The Gingerbread Man".

They continue to learn about the elements of art, now focusing on TEXTURE and SPACE.  They are learning that you can not only feel texture, you can see it.  They played a guessing game where they felt something in a bag and had to try and identify what it was just by feeling it.They will find things in the room that
have texture and do "rubbings" of them.  A "textural ALIEN" will be the conclusion of this with the bottom of their shoe as the texture source.
They will create a MOSAIC using beans, seeds and various other materials to make a textural mask or collage.

Grades 2 & 3 are now focusing on SHAPE, COMPOSITION, BALANCE and learning about artists.  They will study Henri Matisse, see a video about his life and re-create a work of art called "Beasts of the Sea", a collage of sea creature like shapes on a colorful background. They will follow-up with a FAUVE painting in the French style with wild unexpected colors and black heavy outlines. They will learn about other artists of that time period as well. Landscapes will be their inspiration.

Grades 4 & 5 learned how to fold a 12 x 18 paper to make paper journals.  They will work in these throughout the year, doing sketches, assignments from our wonderful new books and jotting down ideas for things they like.

Currently they are learning about POSITIVE/NEGATIVE SPACE and SYMMETRY. They are creating unique pictures based on a theme of their choice using only black and white paper.  It is very complicated but most are up for the challenge and are pleasantly surprised at the results.
They saw and discussed optical illusion works by Jasper Johns and M.C.Escher.

They will be learning how to draw in perspective as a follow-up.  Creating the illusion of DEPTH in a picture, measuring and using their math skills will be integral components in this project.
