Weekly Reminders
Please remember to check your child's S.T.A.R. notebook nightly for homework, notes, and other important information. Also, remember to send your child's natebook to school with them each day.
Please remember to read with your child each night, even if I do not send home a specific book for them to read. Also ask your child questions about the story to make sure they are comprehending what they are reading.
Don't forget to send lunch money with your child each day, week, etc. The cafeteria will only send home a notice when the child has ran out of money and they have to charge.
Remember to work on the "sight words" with your child each night until they have mastered them. Your child should have all of their words at this point. We are now moving on to learning how to spell them. Remember that your child must be able to read and spell all 25 words by the end of the year.
We will be having a spelling test on our 5 "sight words" for the week every Friday. So, please remember to help your child with these words each night by helping them with their homework.
Homework: Please remember that homework is now due daily instead of weekly.
Reading Language Arts
Rhyming recognition - Children will be listening to words to determine like ending sounds to discover new rhyming words. Working with this skill will help your child learn to change only the beginning sound to make a new word. We will be making words in various word families. (-am, -et, -ig, -ot, -ug)
CVCs - consonant-vowel-consonant words - These simple three- (and sometimes four-) letter words can be easily sounded out and spelled. Let your child practice sounding out these words slowly, listening to beginning, middle, and ending sounds.
Comprehension and retelling skills - As we move out of our Book and Print Awareness Skills and into our DRA reading levels, comprehension of a story becomes a major focus. Please use every story you read with your child as an opportunity to name characters, sequence important events, and talk about the story. Books need to be more than a spoken word.
Writing
CVCs -- Students should be able to listen to short three-letter words and stretch the words to listen to all beginning, middle, and ending sounds. It is an important skill to transfer these sounds from the spoken word to paper.
Detailed Drawings - By this point in kindergarten, children should be using markers and crayons to draw a DETAILED picture to convey a message. Drawings shoould include a character (most likely themselves), details to show where they are, details to show what they are doing, and be neat enough for others to notice what is going on. Be thorough and colorful!
"Readable" Sentences - All drawings should be accompanied by at least one (but hopefully two!) sentences. Pay close attention to capitals at the beginning, punctuation at the end, and spaces between SOUNDED OUT words. Students should be able to write beginning and ending sounds for all words but should try for some, if not all, of the medial sounds, too!
Capital at the beginning! Period at the end! Spaces in between!

Would you like to volunteer in our classroom this year? If so, please read the following Q&A for volunteers!
Q: What will I be doing? A: Volunteers in our classroom will work with an individual student or a small group of students to practice math or reading skills.
Q: How long will I have to work? A: Usually parents volunteer 30-45 minutes at a time.
Q: When can I come? A:We encourage volunteers to contact us in advance to set a time for them to come. This way we can have things ready for them to work with students instead of stopping what we're doing to find something for them to do.
Q: Can I grade papers or cut things out? A: In kindergarten, we encourage students to be more independent so they will do most cutting for themselves. Occasionally we will ask volunteers to help make things for centers. Mrs. Hickman and I check all papers, so we can assess each student's academic progress.
Q: Will you call to ask me to volunteer? A: Unless there is a great need for help, we will not call parents to volunteer.
**If you have any other questions or would like to volunteer please e-mail or call me at school (704-279-3145).

*If an early dismissal occurs, your child will be sent home by the way indicated on the Early Dismissal Form on file from the beginning of this school year.
*Please let your child's teacher know if you need to make changes to the Early Dismissal Form as soon as possible.
If I can be of assistance through the year, please feel free to contact me at any time. The most convenient and effective means of communication is to write a note in the back of your child's STAR notebook. This can be read and responded to daily, with little disruption during the schoolday. You may also click the e-mail link at the top of the page to send a message. E-mail is checked daily and can be responded to with ease. If your concern requires a phone call or classroom visit, please respect your child's learning environment by doing so between 7:30 and 8:00am or 2:30 and 3:00pm. This allows for uninterupted teaching. Thank you for your continued support!
Mrs. Sandra Hahn - Rockwell Elementary School - Kindergarten
*Talk to your child about what he/she is learning in school. *Read with your child daily! Ask questions when you read. Here are some great questions to ask: Who are the characters in the story? Where is the setting or where is the story taking place? What happened at the begining, middle and end of the story? What was your favorite part and why? What was the problem in the story and how was it solved? What does this story make you think of? Is this book like another book you've read?
School Policies
TRANSPORTATION: You must send a note with your child or call the school by 12:00 if your child needs to go home a different way than usual. This is EXTREMELY important!
