Whitman's World of Wonder 2008-2009
August News
Welcome to the Whitman's World of Wonder webpage. I hope you will visit often to stay updated on happenings in our first grade classroom and what our precious first graders are learning during the school year.
Whitman's World of Wonder is the best class in the school. There are 9 boys and 10 girls; 19 wonderful students in all.  Mrs. Bass and I are looking forward to working with our first graders for the new school year.  We have many fun and exciting activities planned.  Learning will be fun.
There will be a character trait each month.  These will be traits that good citizens strive for.  We are now the Rockwell Rockets and we're ready to blast off to a great and productive year.
Our first graders will also learn new things about reading, sight words, spelling, writing stories and handwriting, math, science, social studies, art, music, library, computers, guidance, and living and working in a community, side by side.  In first grade we make new friends and learn with the old friends.
First graders can bring a healthy snack each day. No drinks, please. We take 10 minutes to have our snack time while we work.
First graders need to "layer" their clothes. Wear a sweater or such for the chilly mornings. Then it can be taken off when we go outside. He/She may need that extra layer because it gets chilly in our classroom when the air conditioner is on.

Your first grader will learn fantastic things about our language and reading. Just get a free library card from the public library in order to check out books for your child and you to enjoy this year. The weekly spelling words will be found under "Flashcards" at the top of this newsletter.  I will tell you when  spelling words will start.
Important Dates:
Monday, August 18 - Friday, August 22 -  Teacher Workdays, no school for students
Thursday, August 21, 4:00-6:00 -  Openhouse (you can meet your teacher is and see your classroom)
Monday, August 25 - 7:30 AM - First Day of School starts
Monday, September 1 - Labor Day Holiday - no school

Our lunch time is from 11:24 -11:54 each day. Please feel free to come eat with your first grader. Your effort to eat with your child iwill be such a special treat for your child and we love company.
We look forward to a great and productive year full of success for all our first graders!  Hard work, dedication, your interest and involvement will guarantee your child's first grade experience to be a successful and happy one.  Mrs. Bass and I look forward to working with you this year.
