Welcome to Mrs. Stamper's 6th Grade Social Studies

Well, we are in the 4th quarter. It's hard to believe we are almost to the end. But then Time Flies When You are Having Fun... and now I Say The Best Is Yet To Come....

This week in Social Studies we will be working on Databases in the Media center. Learning to sort, find and doing combination searches. We have started to work on our European country Brochures this will count as 2 grades. We will work on doing research for our projects each day this week as we complete our database work. Please look below for the quidelines for this project.


Travel Brochures;
Each student will be assigned a country in Europe. Once I have assigned you a country you must do the following to create a travel brochure.

1. Draw and color your country’s Flag ( you cannot print one) (10 pt.)
2. Graph the major Religions (5 points)
3. Tell me about your country’s climate (5 points)
4. Tell me about the capital of your country, write at least 3 sentences about it
    (10 points)
5. Graph the counties imports and exports (10 points)
6. Draw and color a map of your country, on the map you must include the  
    following: (15 points)
        a. the capital  (labeled)
        b. 3 major cities (labeled)
        c.  1 land form, point of interest, or major river
7. Tell me the population of your country (5 points)
8  Tell me about one celebration, customs, or tradition your country has, in at
    least 3 sentences (5 points)
9. Write a 2 paragraph Biography about a famous person from your country
     (10 points)
10. What are the Major Languages spoken (5 pt.)
11. Tell me about one place interesting you would visit and why ( 5 points)
12. Describe one thing the people in your country do for fun. 2-3 sentences (5      
      points)
13. Copy a recipe from your country ( 5 points)
14. Neatness (5 points)

All of the above information must be placed on the paper I give you to use as your brochure. You will only be given one sheet do not lose it. I have arranged time in the library and media lab to work on this project any work not done during class time will need to be done on your own out of class. Your brochures are due  APRIL 25TH. NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. THIS WILL COUNT AS 2 GRADES. Any extra work done which is not listed will count as Extra Credit. Please do not wait until the last minute to do this and ask if you need help or don’t understand something. DO NOT LOSE THIS SHEET I WILL NOT GIVE YOU ANOTHER ONE!!!


Newspaper articles may be assigned again time permitting . I will leave this on here so if you need to copy the instrustions you can. Follow this instructions below to do the newspaper articles. Each student was given one copy of the instructions. If their copy has gotten lost it is their responsiblity to get a copy from someone or get it off of this page.

You will need to find the 20 articles listed here (1 pt. each)

Each must be on a separate sheet of paper and in a folder (1 pt. each)

Each article must have your Name (1 pt. each), Your Block (1 pt. each) and the Article Number (1 pt. each) on it.

April 7- April 11 * Brochure reserach in media lab, Video "Hitler"

April 14 - April 18 * Computer lab Databases

April 21 - April 25 * Complete Databases , Research fro Brochures, Brochures due April 25th,Video "Th Attic" , introduction to novel "Number the Stars"

April 28 - May 2 * "Number the Stars" ch. 1-6, Vocabulary, compare/contrast, mapping, inferring, quizzes ch. 1-6

May 5 - May 9 * "Number the Stars" ch. 7-12, Vocbulary, Tivloi Gardens web  search, Diamonte poem,  Paragraph writing, quizzes ch.7-12

May 12 - May 16 *"Number the Stars" ch. 13-17, Vocabulary, Fact vs. Fiction, Book review, Book Test, rewrite

May 19 -  May 23 *E.O.G. week. get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast each morning

May 26 - May 30 * Anne Frank Video, passports, city construction, propagandas, discussion

June 2 - June 6 *Video "the Holcaust"  and "Auschwitz", clean lockers, collect books, clean rooms, close out year

NOTE: We will do DOL (Daily Oral Language) as well as some type of writing at least 2-3 times a week. This syllabus will give you a brief description as to what we are doing each week. It may change as needed.  

HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER AND ENJOY TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND I LOOK TO SEE YOU PASSING ME IN YOUR BLUE SHIRTS NEXT YEAR.

Reminders


* All students are expected to follow the uniform policy. Red polo shirts . Khaki twill pants. Belts must be brown or black and in the belt loops. Socks should be white. NO "SAGGIN' AND DRAGGIN'," we want you to look like the wonderful young ladies and gentlemen we know you are.

* NO electronic equipment allowed in the classroom. If your child brings it to class and I see it I will take it from them. The item will be turned into the office and you will have to come pick it up. Simple rule to remember is "If you don't want me to take it. Don't Bring it"

* Any bookbag or PE bag MUST BE MESH OR CLEAR

* Please be aware gum is not allowed on the school grounds and in the classroom for several reasons. Students will be told and warned and if the same student(s) continue to not follow the NO GUM ALLOWED policy, we are given no choice but to send an office referral. Remind your child NO GUM PLEASE.

* Please call the homework hotline daily to find out the homework for the team. I do the hotline for our team so you can call the one number and get the homework for the Creator's Team . I have the homework on by 3:30 and the number is 704-633-2922 ext. 612. You can also leave any messages at this number for any teacher on the team.

* Ask your child what a "Me Thing" is most of our students know that learning and good grades are a "ME THING."

*Just a reminder, good behavior and good attitude is rewarded on a monthly bases with our school wide "Funtastic Friday." Any student who has not been to BAT, ISS, OSS or any other infraction is not allowed to attend. So remind your child to always do their best and have a positive attitude.

* In order for each child to be successful we must work together, support and encourage them to always strive to do their best and start each day with a positive attitude. Always keep all lines of communication open between parent, child and teacher.

THINGS NOT ALLOWED

· Students will NOT be allowed to use Mechanical Pencils. Please do not buy them. We will take them and replace them with a regular pencil. 

· No Jackets or coats may be worn in the classroom. Please send a uniform sweatshirt.

· No trapper keepers will be allowed this will cut down on bulky items.

· No Pencil boxes are needed. They are bulky and cause problems. A pencil bag is acceptable if your child needs somewhere to put pencils and Math items Markers and colored pencils will be kept in lockers till needed.

· Book bags, which must be clear or mesh, will not be allowed in the classroom. This is a safety Issue.

· All purses will be kept in lockers. Girls may go to lockers as needed.

· All cell phones and electronic devices must be kept in lockers. Any brought into the classroom will be taken and YOU WILL NEED TO PICK IT UP!!
