Current Projects ***** We are working on a lot of year long projects.
** We are still collecting box tops, pop tops, Nestle water labels, & Campbell's soup labels. These will be brought to the meetings each month and sorted.
** We are also still having our Recycle Brigade. Every week, each representative will bring their assigned recycle bucket to the gym to sort.
** The Student Council also chooses a Staff Member of the Month to recognize. The students do this by a secret ballot at each meeting. The lucky staff member fills out a questionnaire and has his/her picture taken. The winner also gets a goody bag full of wonderful gifts ranging from school supplies to coupons to restaurants. A plaque is on display at Texas Roadhouse with our winners' names on it.
***** We have also started a new project called Reuse-A-Shoe. Old athletic shoes will be chopped into pieces. These pieces will be used to make playground surfaces. Any old athletic shoe, without metal, can be brought to the school. We will be collecting the shoes until Spring Break. At that time, our music teacher, Mrs. Anderson, will take the shoes to SC to be recycled. The project was a success. We believe the shoes will be used in SC. So if you're on in playground in SC you might be playing on our shoes.

Previous Projects
***** At our April meeting, our principal, Betty Tunks, was named Staff Member of the Month. Congratulations Mrs. Tunks. We also decided to have our End of the Year Celebration at Mrs. Sippel's house again. The date will be near the end of May. We voted to show our appreciation to all of the volunteers at Overton for National Volunteer Week. We also voted to do a little something for the staff for their appreciation week.
***** At our March meeting, Anthony Johnson was named Staff Member of the Month. Congratulations Mr. Johnson. We also came up with some changes for our annual blood drive that should make the students' transitions between "jobs" easier. As always, we worked on our many year long projects. Some projects benefit our school, while others benefit other Rowan organizations, the Ronald McDonald House, or playgrounds in other communities.
***** Our Feb. 15th Blood Drive was a success!!! Thank you to all the parents, student and staff that helped to make it so successful. We went over our goal. We had several first time donors. The students who helped, in any way, with the blood drive will receive coupons for the Overton cafeteria from the student council. Thanks again to everyone.
***** At our February meeting, Mona Hipps was named Staff Member of the Month. Congratulations Ms. Hipps. We also planned for our Feb. 15th Blood Drive. The representatives will be suppling snacks for the canteen as well as select student council members will work at the blood drive.
*****At our January 16th meeting, Elizabeth Sippel was named our Staff Member of the Month. Congratulations Mrs. Sippel. We also worked on our many year long projects.
***** At our last meeting, Mayor Kluttz was able to attend. She seemed pleased with all that she saw. She stressed to the student council members that they could become anything that they wanted to if they set their mind to it. We were all thrilled that she could be there.
Also at the meeting, Mrs. Kim Echerd was named our Staff Member of the month. Congrats Mrs. Echerd.
***** A local girl scout troop came to Overton to help box the cans we'd collected so far for the Salvation Army on November 27th. After they had finished, they made Christmas cards for soldiers with us.
***** Also, the night of the 27th was the Service Above Self Awards held at Keppel. Overton's Student Council won the award of best service group in an elementary school for the 3rd year in a row.
***** We held our Annual Salvation Army Canned Food Drive through December 4th. We almost beat our record of over 2000 cans. The community will appreciate all that was donated.
*****We will be holding our Student Council officer elections on Friday Nov. 9th.
The speeches will be televised on WCTO at 1:15. If you would like to see the speeches, you will need to come to school at that time and go to any 3rd, 4th or 5th grade classroom.
All of the speeches went really well. The candidates looked great on TV. The election, itself, was a pretty close one. All of the candidates would have made wonderful officers. We're proud of you all.
***** After our first meeting, Mrs. Dinah Carpenter was selected as our Staff of the Month. Her picture and questionnaire is posted by the Principal's door. Feel free to check out her answers.
