Attendance Policies
My name is Tamara Morgan, and I am the Attendance Counselor for Knox Middle School. Your child's success in school is directly related to good school attendance. We want to work together as a team to ensure that your child has a very successful school year. There are some policies that you need to be aware of regarding your child's attendance and absences from school.
The NC Compulsory Attendance Law requires a parent/guardian to notify the school each time that their child is absent from school. The Rowan-Salisbury Schools system's policy states that a parent/guardian must notify the school in writing each time their child is absent within 3 days of the absence. If the school does not receive a note from the parent/guardian, the absence is coded as unexcused. The NC Compulsory Attendance Law allows only ten (10) unexcused absences during the school year. Please refer to pages 47-52 in your copy of the Code of Conduct if you have any questions about the attendance policy.
Many parents have questions about early checkouts. If a students is checked out before 11:30 a.m., the student is considered absent for the day. This absence will be considered unexcused until a wriiten note is received. Students who are checked out after 11:30 a.m. will be considered tardy. This tardy will be considered unexcused until a written note is received. All notes must be received within three (3) days of the absence or tardy.
Students frequenly return after a holiday or break after missing several days. They will have a note from their parent that states," Please excuse my child form child because we were out of town." These absences cannot be excused. If you know that you are going out of town, you need to apply for Educational Leave five (5) days prior to leaving on your trip. Please contact the Principal or Attendance Counselor if you have any questions on this issue.
