Recuerden que debo enseñar Inglés a sus hijos, y cada reunión fuera de ese horario equivale a cancelar mis clases, por favor envíen notas en Español en la agenda de sus hijos o dejen un mensaje en el (704) 216 0273 Extensión 5513, los llamaré en cuanto sea posible. Si es caso de una emergencia, procuraré atenderlo en la mayor brevedad posible. No olvide ir a la oficina y firmar el libro primero.

¿Qué es ESOL?
ESOl significa Inglés para Hablantes de Otras Lenguas. Eso significa que la primera lengua de nuestros estudiantes no es Inglés o que se habla otra lengua en la casa. Su hijo(a) es evaluado cuando se registra en las escuelas públicas de Carolina del Norte con la evaluación IPT Test. Éste es un examen que trata de determinar el nivel de Inglés de los estudiantes en las habilidades de Escucha, Habla, Lectura y Escritura. Cada primavera, su hijo será evuado de nuevo hasta que obtenga notas SUPERIORES en todas las habilidades. Sólo cuando esto sucede, los estudiantes salen del programa y no requieren este servicio.
What is ESOL?
ESOL means English to Speakers of Other Languages. Our students first language is other than English or another language is spoken at home. Your child is tested when is enrolled into a North Carolina Public School with the Idea Proficiency test (IPT). Is a test that tries to determine the level of English of the students in the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Every Spring, your child is tested until he/she scores SUPERIOR in all skills. An ESOL student exits the program when this happens.
¿Quién es la maestra de ESOL en la Escuela Koontz?
La Señorita Ángela M. Ramírez enseña ESL a los niños de la escuela Koontz. Vengo de Colombia, Sudamérica. Mi primera lengua es Español, Inglés es mi Segunda Lengua, y Francés es mi Tercera Lengua. Actualmente estoy cursando dos maestrías con universidades Españolas, una en Enseñanza de Inglés y la otra en Enseñanza de Español. También he cursado diferentes materias en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte de Chapel Hill por medio de Learn NC relacionadas con la enseñanza de Inglés y cultura.
Who is the ESOL teacher at Koontz Elementary?
Ms. Angela Ramirez teaches ESL to the students at koontz Elementary. I come from Colombia, South America. Spanish is my native language, English my Second Language, French my third language. I'm currently studying two masters, one in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and another in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I have also taken different online courses through Learn NC, at the University of north Carolina at Chapel Hill related to ESL Teaching and cultural awareness.
¿Cómo el programa de ESOL ayuda a sus hijos?
Una vez los niños califican al programa de ESOL, se determina el horario de acuerdo a los puntajes de sus hijos. El horario se acuerda con los maestros para que los estudiantes no se pierdan de la instrucción importante y no afecte el trabajo de sus hijos. Los niños pueden ser sacados dos o tres veces por semana, y si el nivel de Inglés es muy bajo, saldrían todos los días por 30 minutos.
Su hijo(a) puede ser DE CONSULTA cuando el lenguaje académico básico es aprendido, y el estudiante se beneficia más quedándose en el salón de clases. Si el/la maestro(a) determina que el niño(a) necesita ayuda, se arregla un horario para servir a estos estudiantes directamente sacándolos a instrucción personalizada.
How the ESOL program serves your child?
Once your child qualifies for the ESOL Program, your child can be pulled out of the classroom in times accorded with the classroom teacher to don´t affect your child's work . Only children with low levels of English or non English speaker are to been pulled out either 2, 3 times per week or everyday if necessary. ESOL Classes are for 30 minutes.
Your child can be CONSULTATIVE when the basic academic language is learned and the student can work successfully in the classroom. If the teacher decides that the student needs instruction because he/she is not performing well, we can set up a schedule to serve these students by pulling them out and teach them in small groups.

¿Cómo ayudar a sus hijos en casa?
1. Arregle un lugar y horario para estudiar libre de distracciones como la televisión, música, o niños pequeños.
2. Procure que sus hijos descansen bien en la noche, que duerma mínimo unas 8 horas. Esto ayuda a que el cerebro del niño almacene la información aprendida en el día y prepare al niño paa un nuevo día. Está demostrado que los mejores estudiantes son aquellos que descansan y se alimentan bien, y los que tienen rutinas y hábitos de estudio en casa.
3. Deje descansar a sus hijos mínimo unos 30 minutos cuando llegan de la escuela. Recuerden que han estado todo el día bajo supervisión y presión. Deje que se cambie, coma algo y después estudie por mínimo una hora diaria.
4. Lea con sus hijos mínimo 20 minutos diarios. Si no lee en Inglés, que el niño le lea a usted y usted le hace preguntas sobre la lectura. Involucrar a hermanos mayores o familiares que hablen el idioma para que los niños practiquen.
5. Alimente bien a sus hijos. Como los carros necesitan gasolina, los cuerpos de los niños necesitan comida sana y balanceada para aprender mejor. Un buen desayuno asegura una mejor disposición para aprender.
¿How Can You Help Your Children At Home?
1. Have a neat and comfortable place, and a schedule for your child to study at home. The place must be free of distractions such as TV, loud music, and small children.
2. Your child needs to sleep at least 8 hours every night. This ensures that your child's brain storages information effectevely and prepares the child for a new day. The best students sleep and eat well, and have study habits at home.
3. Let your child rest at least 30 minutes after arriving from school. Remember they have been under supervision and stress during 8 hours. Ask him/her have his/her clothes changed, eat something and then they need to study for minimum one hour every day.
4. Read with your child every night.If you don{t read in English, ask him/her questions in your language when your child reads. If you have other children or relatives that speak and read English, ask for their help so your child can practice with them.
5. Feed your children appropriately. As the cars need gas to move, your child's body needs a healthy diet to learn better. A good breakfast ensures a better disposition of your child to learn.
¿Cómo son las tareas de mis hijos?
Sus hijos SIEMPRE tienen tarea de Lunes a Jueves generalmente. Es muy raro el día en que no tienen nada que hacer.
Las tareas son:
1. De matemáticas.
2. De ortografía. Deben aprenderse un listado de palabras y practicarlo a diario.
3. De lectura. Los niños deben leer 3 libros como mínimo a la semana.

KOONTZ INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL is coming soon. We are planning to have this activity before Christmas. We invite all parents from different cultural Backgrounds to help us make this festival a successful activity in our school. We want to create a welcoming environment and a school that encourages aceptation, tolerance and cultural awareness.
READING:
1. Have your child to read at least 20 minutes every night.
2. Ask him/her questions about the story, WHO are the characters? how are the characters, Where does the story take place?
TRANSPORTATION:
Please write notes when you need to change the students' transportation one day. Don't do it the same day.
